Can anyone please give me a semi legitimate reason why baseball as a whole has continued to ignore the rulebook on the matter of fielder glove size... We faced a local high school pitcher this season, who sported at least a 14" glove - and knocked down at least 2 balls that shouldn't have been touched... The outfield gloves at all levels has become a farce... and not even ONE person in the game will stand up against it.

I really don't think this is good for baseball at all; and don't understand how it has come to this...

Its 12 inches in the Major Leagues!  Rule 1.14 / I have written Rawlings, Wilson, Umpires, etc... noone wants to talk about it... and I guess your Leyalands and larussa's guys use them so why say anything... It's a blatant rule infraction; and the basis for a lot of wrong web gems...

Can you post the text of the rule?  I was not aware there was a 12" limit.  I've seen plenty of 12 3/4" OF/P gloves over the years.

Each fielder, other than the first baseman or catcher, may use or wear a leather glove. The measurements covering size of glove shall be made by measuring front side or ball receiving side of glove. The tool or measuring tape shall be placed to contact the surface or feature of item being measured and follow all contours in the process. The glove shall not measure more than 12 inches from the tip of any one of the four fingers, through the ball pocket to the bottom edge or heel of glove. The glove shall not measure more than 73/4 inches wide, measured from the inside seam at base of first finger, along base of other fingers, to the outside edge of little finger edge of glove

not sure where you are getting your understanding of a 12" glove rule... The high school rule is clearly laid out in the National Federation rule book..Rule 1-3 art.6  "Gloves/mitts made of leather shall be worn by all fielders and not altered to create an adhesive, sticky, and/or tacky surface.  The glove/mitt worn by the catcher may be of any size.  The glove/mitt worn by the pitcher that includes the colors whate and/or gray shall be removed from the game upon discovery by either team and/or umpires.  The glove/mitt worn by all fielders except the catcher shall conform to the following maximum specifications: a) height (measured from the bottom edge or heel straight up across the center of the palm to a line even with the highest point of the glove/mitt: 14 inches b) Width....8 inches c) Webbing....5 3/4 inches"

NFHS Rule 1-3-6...Gloves/mitts made of leather shall be worn by all fielders and not be altered to create an adhesive, sticky and/or tacky surface. The glove/mitt worn by the catcher may be any size. The glove/mitt worn by the pitcher that includes the colors white or gray shall be removed from the game upon discovery by either team and/or the umpire. The glove/mitt worn by all fielders except the catcher shall conform to the following maximum specifications:   a. Height (measured from the bottom edge or heel straight up across the center of the palm to a line even with the highest point of the glove/mitt): 14 inches.   b. Width of palm (measured from the bottom edge of the webbing farthest from the thumb in a horizontal line to the outside of the little finger edge of the glove/mitt); 8 inches.   c. Webbing (measured across the top end or along any line parallel to the top): 5 3/4 inches.
So the answer is no. If you can black out the lacing with shoe polish, or a permanent marker, you could use it.

Now I'm more baffled than ever!  LL rules are 12" fielders gloves; and HS is 14"??

Not sure why in the world that would be...

But really my main disgust is with the pro level game anyway.. It is a totally disregarded rul, that has a huge impact on the integrity of the game IMHO... people get to balls noone should get to.

NCAA, MLB, and Little League has a 12" rule... and refuses to enforce it... and high school has a 14" rule... unreal
