Batter bunts -- ball goes just in front of home plate.

Catcher picks up ball & chases batter to tag him.

As catcher starts to tag the batter, ball comes out of his hand and goes into batter's back pocket.

Is the runner out? (Catcher didn't maintain control of ball).

How far can the runner keep running?

What's the correct call?

The ball is dead at the time it fell into the batter/runner's pocket. (lodged in uniform) The batter/runner is awarded first base.

NFHS Rules:
5-1-1g4: Dead ball.
8-3-3f: Base award.
