A stopwatch is specifically permitted in the coach's box.

Told by whom? Obviously not by an umpire familiar with the rules.
Now that's interesting. I looked up the FED last night and immediately came upon the "Safety Rules" in which it says the coach in the box shall have no objects in the coaching box other than a scorebook to keep score (or something like that.)

Uh, the same rule you were reading?
3-3-1-i. A coach...shall not have any object in his possession in the coach's box other than a stopwatch, rulebook (grrr), scorebook, etc. (other scorekeeping stuff).
Sorry, I wasn't looking at the actual rule, I was looking at a summary sheet of the safety rules.
