I have heard it said that social change starts on the coasts. Here is an article from my local paper which covers the increasing cost of playing youth baseball. In this case access to fields for our local baseball programs.

Sports groups protest field fees

If this is happening here in California it will not be too far away in other parts of the country.

Our LL owns the property that consists of 1 lit 300' "big" field, (2) lit 200' regulation LL fields, 1 girls softball field, 2 batting cages, paved parking lot, maintenance garage, and large concession stand. Babe Ruth and Legion programs are run under the same umbrella program. Yearly improvements are subsidized by tournaments, concession sales, raffles, outfield fence billboards, and a yearly cell tower land use fee (cha-ching$).

I think the key is that very few making the decisions have kids in the organization anymore, and community leaders provide input from their business experience. Not that it makes it a totalitaristic organization, rather it is run as a business and not as juniors playground. Over the years the board has solidified agreements with manufacturers for equipment and jerseys, facility maintenance comes from the hire of senior players, and every family is required to put in volunteer time.

In the end if you put a good product out that is respected by the community, look objectively at change, and don't bite off more than you can chew, costs can be controlled. JMO
