I have a question about the application of the infield fly rule. If there is a popup down one of the baselines or right around the plate that could fall fair or foul, what is the ruling? I don't think you can call an infield fly because you can't call the batter out if there is a chance the ball falls safely in foul territory. Theoretically, the risk of the defensive team letting the ball drop and having it be foul would limit the chances of the defense trying to pick up a cheap double play. However, I can still imagine some instances where that risk may be justified by the possible reward. And that's not to even mention the number of popups around the plate area that are real adventures, especially at the lower levels of baseball, where the defensive team unintentionally misses the popup.
