Bother with what? I answered you, but it seemed like you wanted to ARGUE the point, just like you argued it with 2016.

JH is right, it's a judgement call, and sometimes the play may go out to the outfield. An umpire can call the rule if the infielder misses a ball that would ordinarily be caught by an infielder but caught by an outfielder in the outfield. FYI the rule was changed a bit in 2012.  Read up on the change.

Is that good enough for you for discussion?

Probably the most unique IFF I've ever seen was when the OF made the catch.  Hitter launches a moon shot into the air.  Infielder goes back a few steps and sets up easily under the ball.  But as he's waiting on the ball to come down the OF has ran all the way in from his position to call off the IF.  Before the OF had made the call to take priority the ump called IFF - BATTER IS OUT.  Then here he comes to make the catch.

Threw me off guard at first but I think it's the right call.  The IF had set up camp to catch the ball reasonably and the ump made the call.  If I'm not mistaken the rule doesn't say only the IF can catch the ball.

The rule is not just for infielders only and doesn't just apply to the infield.

It's confusing for sure, but reality is its a judgement call, and unless the call will affect the results (as in last year's playoff fly rule call when Kozma backed off) what does it matter, really?
