We had an infield fly situation over the weekend. Runners on first and second, no outs. Pop up right behind second base, our SS camps under it as the ump yells out "infield fly". We're ok so far. The SS drops the ball (not intentionally if that matters). Batter is already out. Both runners break for the next base. SS picks up the ball and steps on second, then throws to first where the 1B steps on first.

Ump called it a triple play. He said the runners did not tag up and therefore can't advance. But our SS didn't catch the ball. Do the runners have to tag up even if the ball is not caught? I thought it was like any other fly ball where the runners advance at their own risk (tag up only if caught).

Will, did you guys borrow some of the umpires from around here? I can't believe the trouble a couple of ours have with the infield fly rule. We had a situation where our SS caught an infield fly then doubled off R2 who had left early - only problem is that the umps said runner was safe, because an infield fly took away the force play. (Don't worry, I still haven't figured out that explanation either)

I was at the dugout and told our coaches immediately that the ump blew it. The other coaches didn't argue at first, only after leaving the field. By then it was too late. The ump explained his reasoning to our coaches and they got excited about our kids getting a triple play?? Of course my son was the SS and he dropped the ball then stepped on second and threw to first. He was excited too until I told him it wasn't a triple play. I tried explaining to our coaches as well but they said "that's what the ump called so he must be right". Oh well. That was our last game of the year anyway. We finished 40-13.
