First off I have read the things on writing a contact letter, and the timeline, but I still feel the need to ask this/these questions.

I am a sophomore, but I'd still like to begin contacting schools that I am interested in, and I realize that I cannot have any contacts with a coach before July of next year, but are their rules against writing to the dean about purely academic things, maybe throwing in some baseball sidenotes? If this is allowed, what sort of information should I include, and when should I expect a response, if at all? Thanks for your help, the more information I can get the better. Thanks again.

The rules can be complicated, but there is nothing that stops YOU from contacting coaches. The NCAA rules are for what coaches can and cannot do, not players. Right now coaches can only send you general information about their program and the college. After Sept 1st of your junior year, coaches can then start sending letters or e-mail regarding their interest in recruiting you. They still can't initiate a phone call to you and are restricted to when and where they can talk with you in person. Starting July 1st after junior year, coaches can call you on the phone but still have restrictions to how often they can call. But, none of these rules restrict you from initiating the contact. Wink
