My son is a 19yrs old sophomore catcher/pitcher at a small private college in Oregon we live in Southern California. He is having his MRI today to confirm the trainers and doctor’s initial diagnosis of a SLAP tear.
I am not asking for medical advice but I am asking if anybody has experience on how College programs handle injuries as far who pays for doctor visits, PT and surgeries and if we can request who does the surgery if needed?
Any help would be appreciated!

When I was at a DI school, here's what they did...

Student-athletes were required to have their own health insurance. That was considered "primary" insurance. The athlete department carried "secondary" insurance that kicked in when the first ended. I believe that also meant that the department's insurance also picked up the co-pays, deductible, etc

The rehab will vary on the school, but typically the athletic training staff is responsible for the rehab. Depending on the injury, we would occasionally send something to a local clinic but that was normally injuries that we couldn't handle. For instance, we had one kid go to a local clinic for a treatment that we didn't have the equipment/supplies for.

Surgery is another one that will vary. Sometimes our team doctors would do a surgery and other times those student-athletes would go elsewhere..
First off I am really sorry your son is in this position. We went through this last year with son so I know what it's like.

Every school may be different as to how they handle injuries. As soon as he has his MRI and gets the results back the MD or the school trainer should call you to discuss options. At that point the trainer or the athletic director should be able to tell you what the school covers and what they expect you to cover. Most students are covered by their parents health insurance if surgery is required. Again, they'll let you know.

My son did extensive physical therapy after healing and the school sent him to a local PT. excellent facility and he was really happy with the care he received there. Once he was cleared to start PT he went 2-3 times a week, all of which the college covered. Again, colleges may handle this differently and some have him work with the athletic trainer.

Send me a private message if you have more questions but your best bet is talking to the trainer or the AD.

Good luck with everything.
Son had his MRI today and got the results back today around 4:00. They said it showed he has "shoulder Capsule ossification" I am not sure what that is! I have been searching the web for answers but not really finding any concrete information on what it is. The MRI was done without contrast so it has me a concerned! No one from the school has contacted us. We wanted to contact school but my son wanted to handle this on his own.
Sorry haven't been around. Hope your son's shoulder is ok. My son had some injury issues (you knew about the car accident). Funny how he stands out even when playing injured. Fall ball is the 1st time he has not played injured. His back is great. Did break finger stealing bases like usual (the stealing bases part). Looks like he will captain on the spring squad. He will be looking to transfer to a D1.
