Many will probably disagree with me but I would say save your money on DVDs and bring him to a pro. Depending on age, I would probaly suggest a small group (2 to 3) and that way you can split the cost. I found the boys learned alot having buddies there and they had some fun.

I did the DVD route and found that I either overly simplified things or overly complicated things. JMO
Catcher09, Baseball and saving money should not be used in the same sentence! Big Grin

Tim, I agree with catcher09 that nothing takes the place of a good instructor but a good catching instructor can be hard to find. I used this video by Rob McDonald with my son (thanks Lori) and recommend it to any parent that wants to help their son hone his catching skills. Catching Video
I agree with catcher09 on the hitting. I recommend a private instructor but even your son's baseball coach and his hitting instructor can have different opinions on hitting techniques. Add a hitting video in with a coach and a hitting instructor and you can have three different opinions that will only confuse a young hitter.

That is a very true statement!!!!

I agree with Fungo on the hitting big time. If you do go the pro route make sure his coach knows....the coach will generally leave the instructions to the pro and just let your kid hit.

I still havent found a catcher instructor that taught anything but the basics but for a young player the basics is probably what he needs.

I agree with Fungo alot....because catchers are the best!!!!!!
I've had Rob McDonald's DVD for a while and agree that it's good.

I also just recently got the DVD from the New England Catching Camp (click on the banner ad in the HSBBWeb catching forum), and it's also very good.

I'd add that a camcorder is a great tool for working with your own son. Record his blocking, throws, etc. When you play it back in slow motion it's much easier to see flaws that you might otherwise miss.
