Situation:

Runners on first and second, nobody out. Grounder up the middle right at second base. For some reason, R2 does not go to third, but rather, runs back to second base.

Shortstop fields ball right at the bag. Here's the question: Is R2 at peril even though he is on the bag? That is, if the SS tagged him while he is on the bag, is he out?

My thinking would be that since he is forced to run, he can't avoid peril by parking on the bag. So the SS could tag R2, then touch second base, throw over to first for the triple play.

Is that correct?

Also - If the SS were to touch the bag first, then R2 is no longer forced, so he would be safe on second. So the sequence would have to be tag, touch, throw over to get the triple play ... correct?
