Coach,
My take is probably going to be exactly opposite of yours but it is just my opinion.
I don't frankly get what the point of this article is, have read dozens just like them, and can no longer stomach the implications behind them. Let me see....
Sports are unfair? Sports evalutions are too subjective? What a shame some kids don't make it. Hello, life is basically unfair! Welcome to the real world.
Does anyone think that any endeavor in life is not subjective? I did a little Internet research on the author of this piece. Apparently he attended the fine academic institution known as Syracuse. I wonder if he is aware that not everyone who applies to Syracuse gets accepted? Well isn't that unfair? Does he realize that some kids worked their whole life to attend that school? Some with higher SAT scores than those who were accepted. I think you get my point. I don't understand why sports are such a target for people. Do most people have everything go their way in life? I doubt it. What do you do? Give up? I think not. I think you move on and find something that you can succeed at. Oh well... the board is very slow these days.

This article just highlights the challenges presented to HS coaches across the country. You will NEVER please everyone - there will always be parents that want impossible answers, there will always be kids that are heartbroken. I guess there will always be folks that want some statistics as to why.
However, there are also always lessons to be learned by everyone in these situations. My own kids have had disappointments. My daughter didn't make her middleschool volleyball team in 6th grade, broke her thumb right before tryouts in 7th grade and then didn't try again in 8th. She did however in 9th grade and made the freshmen team. That took courage that will serve her well throughout her life. My son didn't get an offer from his number 1 choice school last fall - again a life lesson that he will never forget. Both of these instances have subjectivity in them. Did the school that didn't make my son an offer not realize what they were passing up? I think I'll go call right now and ask for some specifics!
