NFHS rule 8 Article 4 section 2 (G)
Any runner is out when he:

G. Intentionally interferes with a throw or thrown ball or he hinders a fielder on his initial attempt to field a batted ball.
<condensed>

If in the judgement of the umpire, a runner interferes in any way and prevents a double play anywhere two shall be called out. ( the runner who interfered and the other runner involved)

Now to your play.........From the information in the post, I have runner out for interference and batter/runner safe at first. I can not see how a DP could be made on the runner going to third and then back to First to get the batter runner.....

Ump:
Is that in the rule book somewhere?

My son got called for it once, in the worst possible circumstance. League championship game, he was on second. Down by one run, one out.

Grounder to short, he just runs, was at least six feet from the shortstop. Home ump calls interference, now it's two out man on first instead of first/third with one out. We ended up losing.

My son still talks about it, and it was three years ago.

The ump was a guy I've known forever, and I just saw him yesterday. If this is stated in the rule book, I'd like to show it to him so he doesn't do it again.
The rules to look at are 2-21-1, and 8-4-2. As already been stated if the runner is in his normal advance then the only way he is going to called for interference is if there is contact. Now if he is advancing and times it ot be in front of the fielder or pauses then you have interference without contact. Also if he is running normally and the fielder has to step into the baseline to make the play and the runner doesn't yield then that is also an interference. See casebook play 8.4.2v
At a pony league (13-14) game the other night with a runner on first the batter hits a groundball to short who tosses the ball to the second basemen who steps on second base to get the runner out. The runner does not slide into second but runs through the bag and also avoids contact. The second basemen gets off a wild throw due to this and the batter is safe at first. The base umpire calls the batter out due to interference because the runner didn't slide into second base thus forcing the bad throw. Is this correct?
