here is situation: runner on 1st 1 out... runner off with the pitch, ball hit to LCF, a clean base hit. As runner is rounding 2B, SS sticks out leg and trips/intereferes with runner. runner stumbles, but does not go down, regain footing. Continues onto 3B. During this time, CF mis-lays ball and ball rolls toward fence. Runner continues around 3B (with no hesitation) to try and score. Runner called out at home on bang-bang play.
Base umprire acknowledges the interference. But says runner is only awarded one extra base.Since coach sent him home coach assumes the risk and runner is out.
Is this correct?

Since this is the umpire forum, I'll point out that this is obstruction and not interference. Excepting for the term "catcher's interference", the offense interferes, and the defense obstructs.

Anyway, if the umpire judges that the runner would have reached home safely if the obstruction hadn't occurred, then he should award home. Generally the benefit of the doubt should go to the runner when obstruction is involved.

This is correct.

If the runner is out on a bang-bang play, logic would state that he would have been safe absent the obstruction.
The way I teach obstruction is it is an extention of time and distance. You gage how long he was obstructed and equate it to the distance he lost. Then you decide where you are going to protect him. In HS, the umpire is sort of correct, it is always a base, however you can award more. You can also reassess the protection as the play unfolds.
If you believe initially that he is only getting third and he tries for home, he bought it. However in the OP he said F8 misplayed the ball so the award could change to the plate. Since he was out on a very close play, definitely award the plate.

The only thing I can add to this is if the runner stood at 3B for a few seconds before deciding to go home, there's a chance I wouldn't award it on OBS. However, if he rounds 3B and goes home, OBS will probably give him home.

In effect, if the delay caused by the OBS is made up by him standing at 3B, his award is done.
