My son is being recruited by a DIII school. When I look at the 2007 Pre-season roster, they list 17 freshman, 2 juniors, 1 senior and the rest are sophomores. It is a large roster. The coach has been there for about four years. Before I jump to my own conclusions, I would like some input please so that we can consider all possiblilities.

If your concern is the large number of freshman and small number of upper classmen, that, in and of itself, isn't unusual at the DIII level. Players are not on scholarship and sometimes the reality of playing in college turns out to be far more arduous, time consuming, and difficult than is anticipated before you get to college. Combine that realization with grades, family issues, "friendships", time committments of certain majors and you will see a fair amount of attrition on the rosters of many DIII programs.

I was wondering why there were so few juniors and seniors, and I suppose if son decided to go there that is a question that we would want to ask the coach. I was unaware that it was common for upper classman stop playing baseball in DIII. He knows that only an opportunity is given, the playing time is earned. Just wanted some insight from others.
MD,

It happens at all levels. My older son was a part of a group of 14 signees at a D-II in South Carolina 4 years ago; 3 remain there today. What you'd like to know from the coach is how many folks are being actively recruited at your son's position, but there are truly no guarantees on playing time anywhere.

At D III, with no schollys, players seem to drop off at odder times (one did this semester for example at my sons' school after he signed up for spring classes, when baseball players get early access to classes)than we saw at D-II, but as players get older, if playing time is not to their liking, they tend to transfer, or drop off. Baseball takes a lot of time at all levels, and many players do a mental cost-benefit analysis along the way.....
