Did not know whether to cry or smile about your posting. Cry because you (we) don't have any baseball to play, teach or watch. Smile because you (we) love baseball and can not wait till Spring arrives.

As to the numbers, two stand out. First, Western Branch was 3-0 in one run games. Wins over Grassfield, Hickory and Nansemond River. Kept three very good opponents to 2 runs in three games. How do you go 3-0 in one run games, lose only two games in regular season (district play) and not make it out of district? Very tough district!

Second, Grassfield was 1-4 in 1 run games according to your stats with losses to Great Bridge, Hickory, Western Branch and Nansemond River. The 1-0 losses to WB and NR demonstrate Grassfield's outstanding pitching but inability to score runs.

How many days to opening day?

Over a long season these things matter a great deal.

Over a short season -- or in district standings, an even shorter "season within the season" -- any one day's stumble can turn the end result. Even before you reach elimination games come playoff time.

Once you enter the playoffs, of course, it's all a **** shoot. Combine one pitcher having a strong day with one clutch hit or one key defensive miscue and you never know who will win.
Midlo - Very true in a one and done. As solid as Great Bridge was last season I wonder if it were 2 out of 3 against South County or even Lake Braddock if it would have turned out the way it did.

They did beat Nansmond River and Western Branch 2 out of 3 in contested games (throwing out district playoff game with NR where GB went deep into pitching). Nansmond River gave SC everything they wanted in a game that went to the last play and GB/LB was a 1 run extra inning game. To me there wasn't a lot to choose from between those teams making the one game scenario even trickier.

I also agree with Midlo, but I don't really see much difference between the District playoff game where GB went deep into pitching and the Regional playoff game where NR also went deep into their pitching and both teams had advanced to the State playoff round.
