5 Questions With Ryan Santoni

Tampa Prep senior Ryan Santoni has been one of the Terrapins' best this season. Santoni is hitting a team-best .500 (20-for-40) with 11 RBIs and a team-high 16 stolen bases and 21 runs scored, but he's also been a big contributor on the mound and improved to his record to 4-2 Wednesday night after tossing six shutout innings with nine strikeouts in a win against St. Francis (N.Y.).

Q1-Last year you were primarily an outfielder, but you've worked your way into Tampa Prep's pitching staff this season. How do you like you're new role?

A-I like the mound. I love the outfield, but being on the mound makes me feel like I'm in control. I get to set the tempo of everything. It's a lot of fun.

Q2-Has this season gone how you've expected?

A-My hitting has been a lot better than it was last year. I'm seeing the ball better and making more contact, and I'm not striking out as much. I've had off and ons on the mound. Sometimes I walk some people, but I've done pretty well at getting ground balls for outs.

Q3-A lot of people say there is a big difference between the baseball played at the small, private-school level and the public-school level. As a transfer from Wharton, do you think there is that big of a difference?

A-I don't think there is. I think the bigger schools just get more recognition. I think we can play with a lot of the 5A schools.

Q4-Why do you think smaller schools and small-school players get such a bad rap, like they don't have quality ballplayers compared to some of the bigger schools?

A-I think it's because people think people at private schools are just rich kids who spend their money who can't really play baseball that well, and that public schools are where the hard-core athletes go. But I don't think that's true at all.

Q5-You guys are 8-6 now near the midway point. What do you think your team is capable of doing?

A-We're capable of winning our district. I think we can definitely win our district. I think our only trouble is Bishop McLaughlin. Indian Rocks Christian, they beat us, and they're the only team to beat us in the district, but they're not going to beat us again.
