My son, class of 2012, received an invite to a Div I school several states away. I have read on this forum that many schools send these invites as an income source for their Coaches so I am taking it with a grain of salt. But this school did attend a recent local Showcase that my son went to and the camp only costs $90. Would they send random invites to kids over 6 hours away just to attend their camp if they had no interest in the boy?

Either way my son was thrilled to get the invite. If its just a $$$ thing I'll just tell him its too far from home.

Although I am new to this, I have read several threads with good advice with which I agree and will do in the future. Namely, give the recruiter a call and simply ask him if this was a mass mail out or if he invited your son based on what he saw. Also, check the website to see how large the camp is. Either way, it is exciting for the player. Good luck!
If this is a school he is interested in, and has the playing ability to play there, then in may be in his best interest to attend.
But, if it is not cost effective for him to attend, he could call the coach, tell him he is interested in the school, but can not attend the camp. He can see if they have other camps in the future, or what showcases/tournaments they attend and also your son can keep them updated on where he wil be in spring/summer next year.
This is a good way to start a rapore with the coach and see what the level of interest is.
Totally agree with 2013 Dad. Have your son call the recruiter to ask them about the camp and their interest in him. From that discussion he can gauge interest level as well as develop a rapport with the coach. If you determine it is doable, and son is interested in the school then by all means go. You always have an out due to distance or you can defer another time.
Agree with all of the above. Keep the line of communication open. If you can't attend make sure you show interest and tell them you'll send them next summer's schedule. My son is a basketball player and that's keeping him from attending some of the Christmas week camps being held around us. Most of the recruiting guys reply with a "good luck with basketball, keep us posted" email
