If your son truly has an interest in playing at that school, if an honest evaluation of his talent indicates he could play at that level and if scholastically he could qualify to attend that school, a camp is an opportunity to meet the coaches, see the school and meet and talk to some of their players. Not a totally bad idea.
Thank you for the feedback. I had heard that some college camps were just money makers and some actually looked for prospects.

My son's grades are good. While it is hard for a father to ojectively judge his son's talent, he seems to be on the cusp of being a D1 talent. He will be a junior next season. He was all-conference and was named all area by the Pioneer Press as a sophomore. He had a good season with the Norwood Blues. He has to continue to develop and work hard in the weight room. I know some kids get invites just to fill out a camp, but he has an outside shot at it, so why not take a chance? I just want to try and make sure it is a legit chance by the people that run the camp.

Thanks again.
My 2 cents...

If Iowa is one of the schools that you are strongly considering, by all means go to the camp. Evaluate the coaches while they evaluate you. Check out the campus and surrounding areas.

There is no better way to show a coaching staff that you are interested in their program than by attending one of their camps.

This past winter, my son attended the Iowa camp and he and I were both impressed by the pace (always moving, little standing around), the quality of the instruction, the indoor facilities, and the coaches themselves. It was also very affordable.

My wife and daughter found a store that sells nothing but cake and they bought about a dozen mini cakes of all flavors. We all liked the look and feel of the campus and what we saw of Iowa City.

It was an all around good experience for us.

Good luck to you,

We had four people in my car sharing (somehow that word doesn't seem to fit in this case) about 10 cakes (did I mention that they were MINI cakes?). If it had been a competition, I would have come in fourth place, but only because I was driving.

It was cake Mardi Gras!
There is a lot of goofyness on this board at times. But, I have continued to get PM's about the Iowa camp from people that have been there. The input really can give you direction and save time and money. This site is just great!
Thanks to all that have helped. FYI, the reviews on the Iowa camp have been completely positive. Thanks again to all.
Something that I have not seen mentioned on here ... even if you are not a D-I talent, in my opinion, if you get in the right camp, you can learn a lot and play a lot of baseball. I used to go to the camps in my playing days to learn from different coaches and get a few days worth of baseball during the winter.

If the staff at the school does a good job, it benefits players of all levels, even those who have no aspirations of playing college baseball.
