My son is a freshman who will play varsity catcher this year, and he has played for various top level teams in the DFW area since he was 7. Is it better for his development and exposure to play for one of the top organizations (i.e. DBAT, Dallas Tigers), or is it ok to play for an organization/team that is playing against those teams in various showcases and tournaments? Thank you for your help as all this is new to me.

Better can be a relative term, but I would say yes it is better to play for a "top" organization (Tigers, Stangs, A's Cats, Stix, etc.) but I am a firm believer that if you are good, scouts will find you.

It may be easier to find you if he is on one of those teams, but the cream always rises to the top. Also, the level of competition on the team itself may push the player to another level. It does not always pay to be the best player on an individual team, which is tougher to do on the teams mentioned above.

By the way, if he is a freshman catcher that will play on the varsity PM me immediately. Big Grin

Your son should play for the very best team that will afford him sufficient playing time, unless there is some other reason to avoid a team (conflict with particular teammates or coaches, high cost, etc.).

The more talent there is on a team, the more scouts come to see it play. This opens more doors even for those guys who may not be considered the big studs on the team.

All that being said, if your son is going to do nothing but ride the bench and chase down foul balls for that team, then he should go elsewhere. But if they can assure him of ample playing time, you go with the "name" team.
My son played with an organization for several seasons. He was not on the "top" team, but he did play every game. However, the team did not really do too well. That is because, they just could not keep players. It was always a new batch coming in. The top team, basically stayed the same, with some added here and there. He is no longer with that organization, and is doing great.

His old organization put all their emphasis on their "top" teams. Other organizations may have several teams in their age group, but they have more than just one top team. I would do some homework and see how all teams in their age groups have performed and what type of tournaments they do, and if the players that are not on the premier team, are showcased like the other teams. My son's team not helped at all in that way.

There's always, "we should have done this, we should have done that" going through your mind. We have learned alot with my older son, and have learned not to make the same mistakes with my other sons. No team is ever going to be perfect, it's just finding the one that will work for your son. Good Luck!

Very well written. Do your due diligence and chose an organization that "fits" your son. There are alot of good programs, but there are some that are not. Feel free to PM...

Ok. So if I am understanding this right, if your lucky enough to find a top organization, with their top coach, where you can play on a regular basis, then that is the best option. There are concerns about playing for secondary teams in the top organizations, as you need to see what instruction and tournaments are being played. Although I have a belief based on some limited discussions about what the best organizations are, where can I go to find out who are the top organizations for boys in the DFW area at the 15u-18u level?

all great advice to a serious question for a concerned parent.my experience is to have your player try out for a couple of the afor mentioned clubs, see which shows interest, who is on the teams, who are the coaches, which group of ball players your player enjoys being around.to me chemistry between your player and the club is as important as getting exposure. in the long run, no matter how good he is now,he's got to improve.by the way,i know an excellent pro catcher Smile at home now, a stone's throw away from cedar hill that would love to instruct one on one while he has the time.playing time with a bunch of guys he enjoys being around at this time is as important as being seen.but then again i have no affiliation with any of those top teams or any other
I think Midlo Dad said it best:

Bottom line it always comes down to talent ... NOT the name of the team!
