In our case, my son made the decision to showcase as a pitcher only after a few dual position events. His dream was to play D1 and while he had good power tools and athleticism as an outfielder, he really only projected as a pitcher at that level. It was probably more difficult for me to see him not play nine every day than it was for him. He realistically guaged where he was and where he wanted to be seen and made the decision. Ultimately, he was right!
I would showcase where his strengths lie. Typically it is easier to be recruited as a pitcher than any other position. Any college baseball team will have many, many pitchers at any level. However if he is that rare two way player, give it a shot. Two way and/or position players need to hit the snot out of the ball. I think there are many players/parents who think they are a two player but quickly realize they aren't......it just depends on the Division/Conference/School.
It's his future let him decide....unless he wants to be a left handed catcher.

Overall if he is exposed at showcases as a pitcher and is good enough then the people who matter will see him as a position player. Sometime / somehow during his season (summer or high school) he will start out as a starter on the mound and taken out and put wherever he plays or vice versa. Once contact is made he can then tell those interested in him that he plays a position. They can tell him if they are interested in that or not which means he turns around and decides what they want is important to him.

Overall - be seen and show off your talent. When they see you then things will happen.
