Shipbuilder,

Of course Bryce Harper isn't from the northeast but Mike montville very much is and he is playing on the Legion team with Bryce Harper. If you follow amateur baseball even a little you can't help but know about Bryce Harper. I for one enjoyed the daily updates from Mike's Dad on Harper and the tourney. Pretty cool to have a NH kid there amongst some of the best talent in the country, isn't that really the ultimate goal of improving NH baseball? To get NH kids noticed on the national stage?
It is nice to get kids recognized on the National stage but I also think improving the overall quality within NH is just as important, and as a byproduct of that improvement we will get more kids recognized nationally.

I actually think everyone is sort of in agreement in these threads about improving the quality. The bottom line is to have players play in the appropriate level that will challenge them so they can develop. Is a D1 college player being challenged by playing on a Senior Babe Ruth team and mowing down almost everyone he faces? In the same way, is it good to have a player who needs work to sit at the end of a bench because he is playing up a level too high...

I personally would love my son compete nationally and attend these events like Mike Montville. That is a phenomenal achievement (and I'll now be watching as he moves on). But I am also realistic and want to learn and help my son develop and right now I can tell you that the various options out there are a confusing array of competing interests. I commend what Granite State and others are pointing out and trying to raise awareness and hopefully find a solution that can better help the development for all players, whether it is those hoping to reach the National stage or simply those looking to develop so they can compete better on their High School teams. If a player is good enough that he can compete beyond the highest level in NH then he should absolutely be going beyond the borders to get recognized. But it doesn't mean that at the highest level within NH we shouldn't be working to get these players the best competition possible so they can be seen and recognized.

I think programs that Granite State is running are unique in that they really are trying to focus on helping the players. It would be nice to see some structure to the various baseball programs in NH but that may be total pie in the sky thinking due to fact that they truly are competing organizations.

TCClubs,

Great post. I also believe that we are pretty much all on the same page in wanting the best for NH ball players, and as I have stated before I applaud what NHbaseball is trying to accomplish with their showcase. It is an excellent program and I hope it keeps growing and improving. Maybe it will evolve into something that identifies the very best NH has and somehow gets a team of the best into the national spotlight at the big tournaments or such. guess I am a pie in the sky kind of guy..lol. Varsity Baseball is my son's goal and anything beyond that is gravy!! But he sure would like to tast that gravy!!
Fivehole,

I hear ya. It is even tougher for you guys up in the north country. I live in the southern part so at least I have access to most of New England within a couple of hours. Take you a few hours just to get to my neck of the woods! Travel teams are uber expensive, no doubt in that. The ones that go to the big tourney's have costs in the $3,000 range if not higher. I believe that there is a travel team in Plymouth (NH Storm) run by Tom Underwood, you can google it. Some teams do have scholarships for families that need it and will help find a host family too. I think some of the NY travel teams do that, or have done that in the past.
