Not sure why it sticks around.  It's likely a useful screening for outfielders and to gauge the flexibility a MIF can bring to a roster (is the MIF fast enough to get to a gap ball).

I really like the Area Code training.... strong tests for athleticism.   I think it would enhance PG workouts if they added the 5-10-5 drill and vertical.  Both solid tests for explosiveness, quickness and agility. I think PG has done the 5-10-5 at a few PG events.

also they didn't do the 5-10-5  or Vertical neither ,

 this what they did,

30yd, Broad Jump, Powerball, L and R Grip Strength

I've seen previous AC workouts results where they did 5-10-5... could have been west coast tryouts

You are correct . That was last year. But they changed it this year, all the places they've been to so far, this is the format they are using , don't really know why

top end Speed is harder to improve then acceleration, because it Needs good running form and more natural Talent. accelerating on the other Hand can be improved by getting stronger, even with poor running form.

I was a shot putter when I was a kid and for about 20 meters I was almost as fast as some quite good Sprinters in our Club because I had strong legs. over a full 100 I was never fast at all because my top Speed and Speed endurance was poor.

I can thus see top Teams wanting to know the top Speed of a Player.

At the WWBA tourney in Ft Meyers last month a few scouts had the stop watch on guys getting out of the box and running to first. I had heard from a couple of scouts that they like to know how fast a guy gets down the line to first to guage his game speed. The 60 is nice but it has been looked at quite like the 40 times in football now. More practical is the box to first timing. Especially in game.

H-1 times are good, we get lots of them.  Problem is they depend very much on the swing.  RH power pull hitters are going to have slow H-1 times, no matter how fast they are.  Then when they hit a ground ball to the second baseman they will have a better time.  Everything from swing path, to direction the ball is hit can have a big effect on H-1 times.  So the same hitter can have vastly different H-1 times in the same game depending on where he hit the ground balls and his swing on those ground balls.
