I had a hard time figuring out how to word this, so please bear with me.  My 2017 is going with a travel team made up of 2016/2017 players to Nor Cal during the third week in July.  They will play games against club teams in Sacramento, Stockton, San Jose, Santa Clara, and at St. Mary's.  I'm not sure who they're playing but expect the competition to be tough. Would it be out of the ordinary for my son to notify college coaches in the area about when and where these games are? Or, do coaches usually focus on established tournaments and showcases?  (after the week in Nor Cal, the team heads down to San Diego to play in the Phil Singer Tournament, which seems like a more "natural" venue to invite coaches to.

Thanks!

Are these coaches you have an established relationship with?  Or are you just cold calling them?  Either way theirs nothing wrong with letting them know. Coaches will come out and see a prospect anywhere, if it's someone on their radar. If you are just cold calling them then most likely they'll wait until a more established event where they can see lots of kids.

smokeinside,

If your son is interested in these schools, it is best to let them know of his interest, qualifications, and schedule.  There is a good chance not all of them will be interested or will reply.  Do it anyway.  Some or a few will reply and you can start a dialogue.  This is how this process works and that dialogue is so important.   Coaches remember kids, and there is a vast coaches network out there.  Maybe it might not work out at one school but,he may have a coaching buddy looking for a player like your son.  Trust me on this.  The website is full of these stories and I've seen it myself. is a numbers game from both sides or just like a job search.

Look at it from the perspective as a potential employee.  Do you think your son would have a better chance of

1)just showing up at going to a job fair

OR

2) "pre-communicating" his interest, qualifications, experience and when he will be at the  job fair?

JMO and Good luck!

Yes, yes and yes. He should reach out to as many as he can in those areas of travel. In all of tne locations you mentioned there are all levels of schools. If there are some that he is really interested in or vis versa, go visit in person.

This is prime hunting season for these coaches, if there is some interest, they will go.

The Phil Singer will have of coaches there, so be sure to le grand them know team, times and play time.

Good luck!

His club coach should have contacts far and wide. 36 jrs would do an email introduction of his best 2-3 Ps and best 2-3 position players, their academic prowess (if he's not asked for this information yet, be wary of his ability to market your son) and their possible skill match for the program. For example; if playing at Santa Clara, he'd advise O'Brien "come out on (game) when my best LHP will be throwing. If he's done his homework (or YOU have) then you know there's an East Bay LHRP who's just graduating.... etc. etc. Club coaches seem to know in advance who's showing up and may be willing to talk players up as "one of my guys." However, if your son is not a sure fire match academically or skill wise, the club coach will not jeopardize his dependability to evaluate by promoting someone less than capable. Ours gave us an assessment of his ceiling as a HS school senior ("Fringe D1) but added due to his work ethic enters as a 5+ and easily could become a 6+ while there.
