Last year we had a road game in which the other teams P/A guy would play certain sounds bites when a few of my players would come up to bat.

One of my players is a little "heavy set." Everytime he went to the plate they would play a sound bit of a hot dog vendor yelling "hot dogs, get your hot dogs," and would make concession stand announcements.

Now, rip on me if you'd like. In fact, I would expect that from the students section...but doing that to one of my players from an adult working the P/A system? I don't think so!!!

I don't tolerate that from our student section or anyone from our bleachers. No one is perfect, and to make fun of a kid's appearance in that manner, to me, is unacceptable.

If/when it happens when we go to that site, I am going to find the administrator in charge and ask them to put a stop to that. I don't think it is asking too much to that, just show some class.

Yes, I totally agree. It's definitely inappropriate. I'm afraid sportsmanship has taken a nose dive over the last few years. More so off the field than on the field. Did you know there were more incidences of inappropriate behavior off the field than on the field reported to the UIL last year. That's why a tougher stance is being taken this year by TASO. I think even playing 'Hit the Road Jack' on the PA when an opposing pitcher is replaced after having a difficult inning is POOR SPORTSMANSHIP. I've seen it happen. Folks this is High School Baseball. Let's consider that before we react.
funneldrill -- why don't you just plunk a few skinny kids??? Smile

You know I'm kidding! I am in the booth for Plano East and I have not used sound bites this year. I agree that there are many that cross the line, but others simply serve as a form of entertainment. The circumstance you mention is inappropriate and should stop. I do not believe that sound bites should be directed at players in any situation.

Once in a while I use Harry Carry's "HOOOLY COWWW" when something unusual happens or the sound of a baby crying when the opposing parents get on the umps. In the case of the baby, it generally serves as a humorous diversion in a tense situation and has never led to further trouble.

I don't know if I will use sound bites for our last few home games. But I will be overly cautious in considering their intent and the impact to players' feelings.

Playing Mesquite High in the playoffs in 2002 I was yelled at from students that the "Little Debbies" were in the dugout and I thought it was pretty funny. So much that I joined weight watchers and dropped 50 pounds, which I might add probably delayed a heart attack in the future. I have found those 50 pounds but at the time thanked Ritter and his student body for getting me back down to whale size.

Absolutely that is unacceptable! If I were a parent on the P/As team, I would be equally as appalled! It is, without question, a matter of class. I feel you are well within your right to ask that an end be put to such behavior!

Would it be possible to address it with the head coach before you go to their site this year? If it happened last year I think it would be appropriate to address it in a low key manner with him before you go. Otherwise, if it is happening during the game there is not much you can do about it .... it will just continue until you are ready to rip the microphone away from the PA announcer. I agree it is poor sportsmanship and poor reflection on the school district. (hope it wasn't my son's school nono)

SwingDoc,

This must have been before you found out was Sweet & Low was. By the way, we're out at the house. Can you bring some by from your trip to Lubbock a couple of weeks ago, please. Thanks.

Confused by your statement. Either you have or have not used drops (please re-read). You did use an ill-timed drop against your opponent in a recent ganme and it did NOT releive the tension and in fact elevated the emotions and defenses of several parents in the stands from the opossing team.

It is agreed that a well timed, appropriate, humorous bite or drop can add levity and releive tension but sould not be directed at the participants on the field whether it be coaches, umpires and especially players.
UpnIn -- you are correct -- I used one drop in the game against FM -- and it was one of the two I described above -- I played it once -- and did not notice a blacklash -- perhaps I stand corrected. "Once in a while I use..." was intended to represent previous years -- oops, except the one cry-baby wav.

Sorry folks for neglecting to mention one sound bite -- I had hoped to escape without an audit.

Dang. And I thought hearing "Lance is a d.o.r.k.!!" being shouted over and over by the students at Georgia Southern was rough. I tired typing in the word, but for some reason they think it afoul language Big Grin
