Thought I'd share an interesting experience we had over the last couple of games...starting Jr. catcher, Perfect Game Ranked as one of top High School Prospects for 2011, ton's of power, legit 1.8 pop times, yada yada yada...breaks his $300 Demerini last week...off it goes back to Demerini...mom says she's not buying another bat, he'll have to wait until this one comes back...so, he and his brother (a Freshman, also on Varsity) dig around in the garage (maybe even outside behind the garage) and find this nasty looking blue Easton they had gotten from Wal-Mart for $30...yes, it is properly BESR marked, so they say heck, let's use it...now this is the bat that they use to play whiffle ball, hit gravel rocks, and dad has said that he has even run over it with his truck...it's a fence post.

MOVE forward to Friday night...Jr. catcher goes 3-3 with a HR, Triple, single and a walk. Freshman brother in the game as the DH goes yard as well. Wednesday, Jr. catcher goes 3-4 with three doubles (two of which banged off the fence at dead centerfield). Not sure he will go back to his Demerini when it gets back or stick with Ol' Blue.

thats excellent....

Id bet he sticks with ol' blue.......there is an old story that Mickey Mantle's Dad taught him to hit with a bed slat.....

I wish I had a nickel for every time I've seen the big dollar team with the fancy unis and $300 bats get their clocks cleaned by the t-shirt wearing, team bat swinging teams......

Im all for good gear....but if you can hit, you can hit.....

This is a new concept to a kid from Arizona.

Words out. Now everybody will be " rolling bats" with their F250's.

It's the magician and not the wand.

Quick question and maybe slightly off topic ..... But....My son owns a Easton Comp(I know, I know, boy do I feel stupid, I should have gone to Wally World for $35 blue Easton special). In a couple weeks the HS team will be outdoors hitting in less than ideal temps - lucky if we get to 50. As you know, comps can/will break in low temps but the coach does not want kids hitting with wood bats(a whole other subject). Son only has a wood and the comp. What can he do short of heading to Walmart. Smile
"It's not the bat."

Well, it depends on the result.

My son begged me last spring for the new $400 DeMarini. I said no until he came up with $300 in birthday money.

The bat showed up in the mail while he was at pre-game. I drove to the park, peeled the plastic off and handed him the bat as the starting lineups were being announced.

He walked up to the plate and hit the first pitch he saw about 380 feet over the left center field fence.

As he crossed the plate, he gave me a huge smile and said "it must be the bat!"

Next at bat...strike out.

No huge smile and decorum prevents me from quoting him after this at bat.

Another HR with Ol' Blue yesterday...gotta' get a pic of him using this thing.
So true. It's not the bat, the glove, the fancy uniform, etc. It's the want to! Reminds me of the time son's 12 year old travel team won an invitation only summer tournament. We struggled to keep enough boys on the roster to field a team. We always had the least impressive looking uniform, usually black pants with a t-shirt with the boy's number on the back. We did have matching caps though. We played against a big city team for the championship. They had their own charter bus to travel on, matching cleats, matching ball bags, the whole bit! We beat the big city boys! Still a priceless memory even 6 years later!
Thursday nite, Gun blows-up his 2010 Voodoo, on a bomb to left center. It sounded like he hit it with a sock. We checked the bat, D.R.T.

Next AB I see him at the plate with a bat I didn't recognize. After the game, he shows me the bat. It's a 6 year old TPX Omaha he found in the equipment shed, in a bucket, behind the Gator. He's been hitting with it ever since, with a (+).450 BA, tearing the cover off the ball. I may never have to buy a $400 bat again!?!
