I was looking at some Ivy league box scores from this year and I noticed both 7 inning games and 9 inning games. It seems that the first game of a double header is only 7 innings. Is this standard?
The Ivy's have a 7 inning and then a 9 inning game. If I remember right, if the first game goes extra innings then the second game becomes the 7 inning game. Not all the Ivy fields have lights.
The Big East plays double headers in the 7 inning, 9 inning format. The Pac 10 plays 9 innings twice (as should be the case). It appears to be partly a function of geography. The 7-9 split is common in the Northeast and less common elsewhere. Another thing about the Big East is that they play Saturday-Sunday series, with a double header on one of the days. The Pac 10 and ACC play Friday, Saturday, Sunday with one game each day (which I believe is far, far better having experienced both).
Thanks, but not if Harvard, Yale and Brown have anything to say about it. The Red Rolfe Division has been very competitive the last few years.
Also, looks like I might have been mistaken in my above post. Brown won yesterday's first game (7 inning) in 11 innings and still played a 9 inning second game.
