After missing a few scoring opportunities, James River found itself leading only 2-1 going to the bottom of the 7th on the Cal State Fullerton field against Esperanza HS of Anaheim. Esperanza got the big bases loaded, 2-out hit to walk off with a 3-2 win. Ouch!

Daniel Marrs had a dominant outing but, in only his second start, was not ready to go the route. He was clocked at 95 several times and yielded only one single through 4, but clearly tired in the 5th, giving up 3 singles and a run that inning before closing his day with his 8th punch out. Unfortunately the Rapids could neither add to nor hold the 2-1 lead.

Next game is Tuesday at 10 a.m. Pacific against Jupiter, FL.

They righted the ship for a while ... then gave up 22 to Appy State and 49 runs in 20 turns at bat to Miami! Yikes!

But their incoming class just got ranked # 16 by Perfect Game, and it's not just one guy. There are 4 RHP's who can get over 90, plus 2 LHP's who have several pitches and can reach 88. To make it in today's college schedule universe, you need depth. I'm not sure any group of freshmen could solve all the woes right away, but with seasoning and maybe some more in the pipeline behind them we have high hopes for the coming years.
In a case of one tough loss costing you two games, James River got drubbed by Jupiter, FL this morning, 16-4. James River actually led, 3-2, after 3, but then just about everything that they could do wrong, they did. Lots of E's, bullpen unable to get anyone out, lots of K's looking. Bad news all around.

It didn't help that Austin Stadler's start got pushed back due to his having taken a foul liner off the side of his knee during Monday's game. He is OK, though, just held off the mound as a precaution since he can only pitch once anyway. He should start either Wed. or Thurs. In the meantime he did homer in this one and is now 7-9 on the season with a 2B and 2 HR's, not a bad individual start.

That seems a little too personal to be answered by Midlo in a forum. A fully truthful answer might affect leverage. My guess would be that it depends on the $$$. Probably too early to tell for sure. Of course, there are some who will go to college no matter what.

...and thanks for the updates, MD.

The MLB questionaires my son has gotten ask the same question and I suppose if we didn't know any better we would tell them what it would take in $$$, thus losing any (assuming some exists at all) leverage.

I wonder how many players come out and say they will sign for little money out of highschool because they don't want to go to college. On the otherside of the coin I think we all can think of some players that have asked for too much and ended up in the late draft picks and off to college with hopes that they will still garner the same interest come their junior year.....

Anyway, we have just replied by saying "please make an offer"
ARMYOFONE(RET),
I have heard (on HSBBW I think) that it is in your best interests to be honest and realistic when scouts are inquiring about what it would take to sign your son. I would imagine that if your son is a hot prospect such as Midlo Son it gets a lot more complicated. Obviously, the insight of a keen advisor will help you through the negotiations.
