James River v. L.C. Bird

Midlo Dad,
I know Bird JV is playing at JR (doubleheader?), so it stands to reason the varsity will be playing at LCBird. Typical start times @ Bird is 6pm. Sorry, I don' t have details as I'm travelling.

Game is at Bird at 6pm

Anyone know results from the game? I assume JR won. Any details? Wasn't in the paper this a.m.

I believe JR won handily, maybe 8-1 or something similar...I believe Kit Scheetz threw another great complete game..he's having quite a year !

I was kind of thinking that LCB might pull the upset, if they threw Conner and he had an "on" night.

I think the ending score was 8-1 and yes Kit Scheetz threw a great complete game and held Bird to 4 hits I believe. Only run for Bird came from a solo shot from Bryce Harman. But Kit Scheetz threw a gem of a game overall.

Scheetz gave up 4 hits, walked 1 and struck out 11.

He has had a breakout year so far and has been very consistent from one start to the next. Perfect example of a kid getting an opportunity and taking full advantage of it time and time again.

The Cosby and JRHS teams are separating themselves from the rest of the Dominion District and their next match-up is a "can't miss" game in the Central Region.

Can we get some more info on this Bryce Harman kid? I've heard his name on this board several times, and it seems like every time I read about Bird his name is mentioned. No matter who the opposing pitcher is he always seems to collect 2 or 3 hits. It's kind of like last year when every single time you saw a JR box score, you same Collin Lawless with a couple hits. I'm seeing the same thing this year with Harman.

Perfect Game has him as a 6'5" 190 pound lefthanded sophomore but no scouting report (at least no free scouting report). It sure sounds like he has the makings of a premium bat.

Info on Harman at link above. Plays for Braves National 2012/2013. Great hitter - potential to be very good pitcher. Great target at 1b.

True - but he will tell you basketball is his "hobby".

Harman is now a sophomore. Last year and this year, I've seen about 6-7 LCB games. He has multiple hits in all but one of them. I saw him take Nate Kirby deep on a fastball that tailed in, lefty to lefty, at 88 mph. Tuesday he took Kit Scheetz deep for the only LCB run of that game.

I think this is just an elite hitter. I hear good things about his pitching, too, but last year he suffered with some arm soreness, and this year he's had ups and downs on the mound. But given that he's still got 2 more years to go, that could well develop, too. The hitting has already developed, if he gets any better, watch out.

He and the Hunter Williams kid at Cosby are two guys to watch.

Today's RTD says Harman got one official AB yesterday (walks, I guess?) and used it to hit a walk-off, 3-run HR off a VMI bound senior pitcher to get LCB a win over Manchester, 6-3.

Right on cue.

He went 1-2 with deep flyout to center, 2 walks and the homerun. But Nick Conor pitched a great game and also hit a homerun to tie the game up.

so with a Manchester loss that should have JR/Cosby playing for the District championship in their next game. When do they play again? Has to be soon. What happens if their only district losses are splitting their two games leaving them with one loss each?

I don't know if there are additional tie-breakers, or if they might play a one-game playoff for the regular season title. I think it's the one-game playoff, assuming both suffer no other losses from here on out.

But unless and until JR wins, it's merely an academic discussion. I'm sure Cosby will be trying to moot that discussion when they meet Tuesday afternoon.

i am sure both teams will be out to simplify things. i got to see the last one at Cosby and hope I can make this one.

I have to disagree with you there. Monacan's stands are very lacking IMHO. I love the Monacan field but for the visiting team there is no room unless you want to put your fold out chair on a steep hill.

all tyhese higgh school fields makeyou understand the value of a below ggroumd dugout!
At JR the black material they hung on the back of their dugouts makes it really hard to see all tyhe action.
At Monacan they do have a very nice deck area behindho e plate...always feel like tjey should be sellingg some beer over there

I hear what you're saying about JR's field. As nice as it is, it seems like there's always a pole or something in your line of sight.

But the worst sight lines are at Monacan and Godwin. A whole lot of the stands there have obscured views of the home plate area. You see a lot of folks hanging around behind home plate at both places, just trying to see the whole game.

I know the coach at JR wants to have sunken dugouts someday, funds permitting. But between ADA requirements and drainage problems, you have to be careful what you wish for there, you just might get it.

not too many RF&Ps in the area! What makes it different is the dugouts below ground. I must admit I usually do not sit in the stands at games...probably best spot is in the top of stands above dugouts
