But I found this picture interesting as it is almost the textbook example of what an umpire in the 2 man system (position c) would have seen on that same play...
after viewing the slow mo replays of the real play I know I would have been wrong, but at game speed, at this angle...In our games.... I would have to call this as an out...
From that angle and in a 2-man system douing HS games, if the play was called an out, it wouldn't be a big deal because from that angle in a bang-bang play, it could look like an out and if that's what the ump saw from where he was positioned. If that same HS ump said that the ball got there first so the tag wasn't necessary, he too should go back and learn the rules. The thing is with those 2-man crews is that they should get some more slack on those close plays because they're at a disadvantage.
However, in an MLB game with a 4-man crew and umps on top of the play coupled in with what that umpire used as his argument, he was completely wrong and has no excuse. If in his mind, the ball beat the runner was his mindset, that says he wasn't looking for the 3rd baseman to complete the tag, and if he was on the play, he should've caught it. As far as I know, tags are part of the game too
