I have had first hand dealings with a number of players that played under Coach McFarland. None had anything negative to say. He has young assistant coaches that relate well with the players. I also hear they are working on plans for a new field over at the old HHS which JMU recently purchased. A top notch program.
Spanky usually gears recruiting around pitching
since that is his speciality. Team has been up and down over the past years but rebounded
last year. Be aware that you must be recruited
because walk ons are not usually offered. The walk on tryout usually lasts only one hour. Kind of hard to see if a kid has heart and desire to play the game in such a short time.
I totally disagree on the last quote. Even if it is only a one hour try out at the very least a coach should be able to see heart and desire. Talent might not show up that day but heart and desire should show up everyday. Secondly since coaches scout all year if a kid has any talent they would have at least heard of him and had some idea if they could play or not. D1 coaches are paid to win so they should know talent when they see it. If we are talking about heart and desire see a D3 coach. Those are the kids who are truly playing for the love of the game/sport.

I would not expect anything differently. The chances of making any program as an unrecruited walk-on or recruited walk-on is like a leisurely walk up Mt Everest.

I'm sure it happens but it is not a common experience.
