Getting those extra 3 runs so that Kirby could be pulled was big. I can't see Kirby being available even just to close on Friday but hopefully by Saturday he could be strong again.

That is, "IF".

It would be neat to see Kirby matched up against Rogers on Saturday.

Is it 2008 all over again? James River has trouble with Cosby, but someone else knocks them out in the quarterfinals to remove them as an obstacle.

Well Mr. Kirby was everything as advertised. Easily the best pitcher the Spartans had seen all year. He went to full counts on each batter in the 1st inning, and the Spartans had to feel encouraged with a hard single up the middle by Stevens, and a loud out to CF by Haeuptle. Only a great diving stop and throw out by the 3B Caples off the bat of Allen kept the Spartans off the board.

Then the old adage about great pitchers came into play, "if you don't get to him early, you won't get to him". Indeed. Innings 2 through 5, Kirby was as close to flawless as you can be. Only a swinging bunt by Stevens for a hit, and a pop out to 1B kept me from putting a K in the book for each Spartan hitter. !2Ks in innings 2 through 5.

In the 6th, Boyd led off with a hard single to center and Stevens was then HBP. On an attempted double steal, the ball was thrown into left field and Boyd was able to score. The Spartan crowd came to life at this point as they sensed Kirby tiring with the meat of the Spartan order coming up. As great pitchers do, However, Kirby kicked it into another gear, fanning the 3, 4, and 5 hitters to end the rally, and end his evening with strikeouts 13, 14, and 15.

Kirby's line: 6IP, 3H, 0ER, 0BB, 1HBP, 15 K on 108 pitches. The 108 pitches I would guess would have him unavailable Friday.

Carrico came on in the 7th and after a leadoff walk, retired the next three to secure the win.

JR finished with just 5 hits, three of which were Roberts', including a bunt single and the 3-run HR. Kirby had a single and Caples had the HR. But they also benefitted from 6 walks, 4 of which scored.

Friday is going to be an interesting game for James River. Roberts will undoubtedly start but he has not yet worked back enough stamina to be expected to finish. Glad to hear that Carrico was solid yesterday as he will probably be called on for 2 innings or more on Friday.

Who won in the East v. NW games yesterday? I don't know what the matchups are for Friday.

I see now that the Kellam v. Freedom game was moved to Wednesday. Wow, that puts the winner at a disadvantage. Most times the teams that advance try to use their # 1 guy Tuesday-Saturday, which is a bit short for rest as it is. Going Wed-Sat is very tough.

While Mitch Moynihan is very good for Kellam, the next guy on the list, Sam Sinnen, would be a number one for a bunch of teams.
