Is there anything we should be doing if my son plans on going the juco route. Most of the posts involved in here are directed towards the higher levels. His grades aren't the best <almost 3.0> and his sat were only 940. He has applied to about 5 schools and hasnt heard back from any of them. He never contacted any of the coaches. His high school coach is in his 3rd year and says he should just go to jr college. So far no one has played college ball from this school, at least lately. Our AD is also new and its hard to get advice from either of them. Should we contact the head coach for the school, or have our coach do that? Send a schedule? Should we do the same to the schools he applied to...they were cal states...we kind of thought it will depend on how he does this year...he isnt that "wow" kind of player, but does have success. Most of the players that got the rides this year <seniors> had great stats as jr's. He ended up with about a 333 av. with 3 hr as a jr....and will pitch this year. Over the summer he had success pitching. He did 2 camp type things where you pitch to 5 guys and did well...no hits...2 k's each time..but no one contacted him after....any thoughts/

socaltrucker,
I think from the way you worded your questions you know what you need to do. Don't be bashful. Have your son contact the JUCO coaches he is interested in, send stats, HS schedule and just show interest. Send letters to all you have interest in. If there is a possibility of going to a JUCO tryout at one of the schools that interest you then that is what you need to do. It helps to have a coach or scout recommend you but that's not always possible. Competition is stiff in the JUCO ranks since many top players use JUCO as a stepping stone to get seen and get drafted by the pros after the first year of JUCO. One good thing, DI JUCOs have more athletic scholarships then NCAA DIs. I feel like a seasoned veteran since I went through this last year with my son. I'm happy to report he is having a good season with a DI JUCO here in Texas. I'm sure some scouts or coaches who monitor this board will be glad to give you additional insights into the process.
Pantherproud is completely correct. You need to contact the schools he would be willing to attend. Contact as many as possible. Let them know a little about your son...what position he plays...a few stats, etc. Ask your high school coach if he would be a reference and let him know what you are doing. Any other coaches (summer, etc.) would also be great. These JC coaches often have alot of inquiries so it's good to give him enough info to go on. Follow up your letter or email to the coach with a phone call. Get a feel for what's going on and what he needs.

I hope your son finds the perfect place.
ditto on using this site...I didn't find it till fall of our son's senior year...also, go to showcases in your area...you can call coaches of schools you're son is interested in and ask if they can schedule a tryout...don't give up if he hasn't signed by April...there will be lots of tryouts in May and June...go to the NJCAA website and look for colleges that interest you...NJCAA normally has a link to college websites...get on those websites and some will have baseball questionaires - fill those out...they will also post when their tryouts are...also have email addresses of coaches...don't give up...and don't count on your HS coach to do all that much...we learned that early on...ours DID send out letters on some of our kids but that's about it...best of luck and keep us posted!
My son had grade problems in his Sr. year. Was being recruited by several D1's, until they saw his transcripts. Is now at a JC and having a good time. Wishes he was away from home, but that may come. You are near one of the top Calif. JC baseball schools. Riverside and Coach Rogers sends players to D1 every year. Out of stat JC's, D1, can offer sholarships, but Calif. JC's are not allowed to provide money to atheletes.
He is a Sr this year....we have to get together and write some emails to the local colleges...our schedules just arent matching up between his work and mine...this weekend for sure....called rcc and left a message but secretary said probably wont hear back because of the baseball season is in....Is an email ok...or acutally write a letter??? Talked to his high school coach and he said he would write letters to schools if we give him his picks....just never enough time in a day, it seems...
