I need some advice.
A player on my son's HS team (senior)has made great strides in the past year as a pitcher. Although small with weight to match, the little guy is now able to hit his spots with an 89 mph fastball. His folks never really pursued anything regarding recruiting as they didn't think he stood a chance to play college ball. I think he makes a great JUCO candidate.
Suggstions on good programs, who to contact would be appreciated asap. Do JUCOs try out?

FYI, player is probably a better golfer (he is an award winner) but would rather play baseball.
I have suggested parents begin calling JUCOS, but not sure which ones to recommend. Good GPA, but not real 4 year college material as yet, lacking courses. Do they still have to apply to the clearinghouse? I would not put myself on a limb if I felt there was no talent.
Thanks much in advance.

TPM,

He does not need to do the Clearinghouse to play JUCO.

JUCOS do not even offer scholarships until January.

For pitchers I like (just to name a few) Polk, Seminole, Broward, Indian River, St. Pete, Tallahassee, Chipolla, O-W.

Of the schools you mentioned the only one I'd be careful with is Manatee CC. Have not had a good experience with those coaches as far as being honest with players and providing good coaching.

TPM is you want to pick my brains some more just call - you have the number.

This is helpful thanks. Also Mr. D thanks for the info.

I heard Manatee had a good program (?). What about Palm Beach CC?

So my understanding is that you have to act now for January scholarships? What are kind of money are pitchers usually given?

As you can see, I know NOTHING about JUCO recruiting. Other than after DK signed CU, a few called him in case he was drafted and wanted to go JUCO.

Stay safe fellow Floridains. Frown

I have a son who currently plays at MCC, and I assure you the coaching is second to none. The program is highly regarded by both professional scouts as well as major colleges. The coaches have always been honest and while they may not tell you what you want hear, they do tell the truth and truly care about the kids. They have very high standards and demand alot from themselves and the kids. That said, the other programs you named are all competetive and seem well coached. Good Luck
Manatee's coaches have a long history of developing players for the next level. Several former mlb player's son's havegone there. They are very well respected by the professional community. Had my son chosen the juco route, that is where he would have gone. Very good coaches that were careful not to make too many promises. That is what I liked. So unkept promises may also be selective hearing.

I don't think it is right to trash a program or coaches from hearsay. Without firsthand knowledge, one should keep their opinions to themselves. jmo

Any opinion to the opposite may be agenda attached.
From the MCC website

MCC'S 24th YEAR HEAD COACH IS THE LANCERS' ALL-TIME WINNINGEST COACH

Tim Hill begins his 24th season at the Lancers helm as only the second Head Baseball Coach in the history of Manatee Community College. Nine JUCO World Series appearances, 5 JUCO World Series National Runners-up finishes, 12 State Championships, 28 Conference Titles, 33 All-Americans, and 25 Major League Players, 34 State Tournament appearances, 304 players to four-year colleges and universities, and 161 players advancing to professional baseball are just a few examples that has kept Manatee Community College baseball at the forefront of state and national prominence throughout the programs' 45 years of existence.

That's impressive for such an incompetent liar.
Coach Pincus, Why would you say such things?

We sent two players there and they were very unhappy with the situation. I have spoken to parents of other players who are also unhappy. Based on that information we would not suggest that school. My opinion is based on information from past and present players.

The statement I made about MCC was IMHO based on player's experiences.

Just as I have spoken to some players at UL-L where you son is attending and they are very excited about the coaching staff and team. So when people ask me of that program I have some good insight and posititve information.

So first hand direct knowledge of an unhappy baseball player(s) is complete justification for the public trashing an entire program, in your opinion.

Thanks for that clarification. It will become useful in the future.

Palm Beach CC - Alex Morales is a second year coach who has an extensive background with the Braves organization. The players love him and he has turned the program around nicely in two seasons. Thus far he has had two pitchers sign in the draft and he has tons of connections around the country. Two pitchers this past season that he "couldn't use this season" he found a juco in Alabama for them to play. Good guy whop is trying to keep so. Florida talent in So. Florida. They are losing a number of pitchers to graduation and the draft. Field is nice and they've been getting a nice turnout for games.
