EH, let me clear up the confusion. If a student lives within the "recruiting area" of a California juco, the coach can initiate contact with the student for recruiting purposes. If the student wishes to attend a juco for which he doesn't live within their defined recruiting area, then the student must make first contact to the school, and then the school can recruit him from that point onward. Each CA juco has an area from which they recruit players, and they're limited to those areas for initiating contact. If, say, you live in the Sacramento area but your son is interested in attending Butte College, or Merced College, he would have to contact the head coach of that program to express his interest in attending their school, and the coach will document that initial contact and then recruit the player if he has an interest in that student/athlete.

One of the benefits of playing on a traveling team that gets around the state is that you often get to play in front of juco coaches who represent programs outside of your local schools. For a player who is interested in going the juco route, this would be another reason to attend some good college camps and/or showcases within the state. Even though my son is gray shirting this year while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, he was approached by 4 or 5 juco coaches at our away games this summer to determine his interest in their programs. These are coaches who've seen him a year earlier at the Stanford Camp, showcases or at our tournament games in the bay area or southern CA. If not for doing these things, none of these coaches would have a clue about him and he'd miss out on potential opportunities to play at some good schools. That said, he still plans to attend one of the local jucos, but if a good opportunity isn't available at his preferred school when he comes back next year, he knows he has some other options to choose from at schools located in the bay area, southern CA and the north valley above Sacramento.
