I feel so out of the loop and think my kids not doing enough to be recruited. What is Junior Day and do you only get invited by being seen at tournaments?

My son did not play summer ball but will this year. He's been attending a camp he's very involved with in New England and is a counselor now. This year he will not be able to go as he needs to play summer ball to get out there.

Any advice is appreciated! Thank you

Hi, L3.

I think your real question might be broader than any specific element like Junior Day. Instead, the question might go something like "has my son effectively taken himself out of the recruiting picture if he wasn't seen at tournaments last summer?" I say this only because, as kv5137 points out, Junior Day is one of but many elements in the process of being recruited.

If I'm right about the question, I think the answer is "not necessarily." While denying himself the opportunity to be seen by recruiters last summer, he lessened his chances of being seen (and, to be completely honest, may have raised doubts among some about his level of dedication to the game); but, he's certainly not removed himself from the picture altogether.

It sounds like he's about to play his junior season in high school. If so, and if he wants to play baseball in college, he should play on a summer team that puts him up against the best competition possible. Then, especially because he was out of "baseball commission" last summer, I think it's especially important for him to let the recruiters at programs that are of interest and make sense for him know of his interest. In the process of doing so, he should tell them what team he's on and send them a schedule so that they can be on the lookout for him when they attend a tournament in which he's playing.

The summer after a player's junior year gives him sufficient opportunity to be seen by the right people if he puts himself in a position to be seen and lets those who should see him know that he's there.

Best of luck to your son!

My son had an injury his sophomore season and was limited through that summer on his ability to play. He was able to play again in the fall of his Junior year, and to many people came out of nowhere to have a successful spring HS season, and do well in the summer season and showcases. He was fairly heavily recruited and committed his current school by the end of July.

Can it be done? To answer you original question it most certainly can be done. Just get going! Big Grin
