I have some questions about my son's eligibility status I'm hoping someone (3FG, are you listening?) can help me with.

My son is in his first year at a D3 school playing ball. During his last two years in high school he took some courses at a JUCO as part of a statewide program (he did not play baseball for the JUCO). His 4yr college accepted these as transfer credits and, as a result, he will have Junior academic status next Fall and will graduate after 3 years at the D3. This is nice as it saves dad some serious tuition $$!

Here are my questions:
1. Since he will graduate having only played 3 of his 4 academic years, can he transfer to a D1 and play immediately? Or does he have to sit out one year like a non-graduate does.
2. Is he draft eligible the June following his Junior year or as a rising Junior?

And before anyone jumps all over me, a) I know D1 coaches rarely if ever look at D3 players for lots of reasons; and b) I know he will not be drafted having only played one season at a D3. I'm only asking because my son asked me. I didn't know the answers, but I know to come here to ask the experts.

Thanks in advance,
PD

You may want to private message 3FG if he doesn't respond, but in the meantime, I found this:

High school players are eligible only after graduation, and if they have not attended college.
Players at four-year colleges are eligible after completing their junior years, or after their 21st birthdays.
Junior and community college players are eligible to be drafted at any time.

For the purposes of baseball (as opposed to academics) it is better to refer to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. year of school. Both NCAA and MLB rules refer to year rather than class designation.

After he graduates, he can by rule 14.1.9 transfer to a D1 and play immediately. In this particular situation, baseball players do qualify for the one-time transfer exception. He will need a transfer release from his first school, which he will obviously receive. BTW, 14.1.9 was revised effective Aug 2011 to permit this scenario for baseball.

Do bear in mind that he must transfer at the beginning of the academic year. Mid year transfers are not eligible until the next academic year.

My understanding of the draft rules is that he must have finished his 3rd year of college or be 21.
