OK so whats up every body just thought id introduce myself new poster. goto a pretty good 4a in houston texas. play some good competition( Played about 4 draftees this year)some stuff about me.
6'3 200 lbs
Fastball sophmore year 78-82
good curveball
project change-up
I had some problems because i toke some bad advice about longer strides ( COUGH dick mills Cough) worst thing ive ever done decreased to about 74 for a few games before i fixed it.
now i think im throwing alittle harder probably low 80s consistenaly
IM STARTING TO WOR HARD
for a while i was guilty of being lazy although i still threw hard i realized if i want to play any higher level baseball ive got to bust my *** so i started doing so. now i have solid mechanics.
i throw just about ever day and work out my legs alot and occasionaly low weight high rep for the upper body.

so my Quaestions
1. is it realistc for me to be throwing mid 80s by the season time if i work hard ( which i plan on)
2. does my workout above sound good?
3. Am i above average velocity so far.
4. would i be considered projectable

1. Yes, I'd keep refining the mechs. The stride thing with Mills likely effected your timing. You didn't mention long toss, I'd follow what Yeager suggests (It's on u-tube look it up). At low 80's my advice would be smooth the mechs, work the core..velo will follow..just trying to throw harder is potentially a bad thing..if your body isn't ready it will break down.
2. Core work!!, the hi rep upper may be ok..I'd work on stuff like de-cell conditioning (3-5lb weights), stay away from military and benching..find a good work out program that is whole body and comprehensive (Tuff Cuff by Steven Ellis is great..I am biased..I'm an administrator on his site..but it is a year round whole body program). Running should be sprints and distance.
3. I'd say for a Jr. your velo is average to slightly above at lo 80's
4. You've got the ht and wt....I'd make sure at this point not ever to fall into lazy again..if you want to take it to the next level that is...Micky D's got plenty of lazy...coaches can spot it miles away. Hustle...even when no one is looking, work like there is no tomorrow and learn everything you can..you'll get a shot.
yeah jd i looked at steven ellis site its nice but i looked and i saw those clips of your son hes good. and with my new mecahincs i throw ALOT like him i shortened the stride and he gets over his front side really well and drives the ball downhill very good mechanices
what did he do to throw that hard?
how hard was he thowing during high school
fresh sophomore etc?
that would be a big help thinks
what kind of workouts do you have him doing
Thanks for complimenting him, he does work hard and he is chasing the dream...we'll see where it goes..
As a jr. he threw 86-88. He is just back to that after some personal trials (Not injury). He threw extremely well this summer and has some real possibilities for college.
He works with a former major league catcher and a minor league pitcher. They work his a$$ and it's fun to see him maxed out Big Grin
The former minor leaguer also has a degree in bio-mechs and is a strength coach from heck..his name is Jarred Payne (King of Wink) They use their state of the art facility which has stuff I can't even describe in it. Quite a bit of his stuff is agility oriented and core focused. We throw very regularly, do long toss as many times a week as we can, he'll throw at least one bull pen a week (80-100 pitch).
To answer what it was that got him to throw that hard, I'd say it was getting his mechanics as smooth and efficient as we could early on (He started working with Rick Wilkens when he was 13..he had been attending camps put on by the University of North Florida..wow..I think since he was like 11 or 10 I can't remember exactly), and conditioning..he works extremely hard on his conditioning. He also learned about arm health and maintenance so he understands how to prepare for a start and what to do after pitching, as a result we haven't had any injury issues through high school (He concluded high school a couple of months ago and had the lowest and only sub-1 era in his schools 50+ year history).
The only other thing I'd pass on to you is GRADES!!!! Make sure you keep your GPA as high as possible and prepare as extensively as possible for for you SAT or ACT to acheive the highest possible score..this has limited my sons options and as of now we are looking at Jr College due to this (He had several D-1's interested but his GPA and SAT disqualified him..Ga Southern was the last school, but he's had serious looks from Miami, Clemson, UNF and the Citidel).

oh thats good for a junior alot thought i thin if i work hard enough i could be there i just got done doing some distance and sprint work. and some plyometrics i should be going to the gym soon and will work the core hard. i also like to throw evryday. i think thats the key to pitching is throwing.do you make him air it out or is it on a line? i try to follow the jaeger program to the dot and have gotten out to 250 so far so i hope it will keep increaseing
