Any thoughts about the Junior Sunbelt Classic? Have heard good things in the past, seems like an honor to get asked, but it is conflicting with some pretty big 16 yr old events, in particular a Mickey Mantle World Series qualifier, which would seem to take a lot of pretty good incoming juniors [especially Texans] out of the Junior Sunbelt.

It is high profile in the minds of many college coaches and scouts. Go by all means if you get a chance. It is an honor to be selected to the Tennessee team. Kyle Waldrop (Drafted 1st round in 2004 by the Twins) was selected as the outstanding pitcher in 2003 and Harrison Eldridge as the tournmanet MVP (Now starting leadoff with ECU as a freshman)

I run the state of California and we have been going for about seven years. There are nine state all-state teams (normally picked by state high school associations). The week starts with a banquet that always has a great guest speaker (Pete Rose, Ozzie Smith, Steve Garvey among them). Every team plays each other and is culminated with a championship day (10 games in 6 days). The town of MacAlester does a great job in housing and hosting the tournament and the talent level is only equalled by Joplin. This tournament is the one that the kids talk about years after.
Thanks guys. I get the impression that a couple of you may be talking about the original Sunbelt Classic, held in the Norman or OKC area as opposed to the Junior Sunbelt Classic held in McAlester the week before. The latter being for incoming Juniors, while the original Sunbelt is for incoming Seniors. My question pertains to the Junior in McAlester, which this year conflicts with a pretty big AABC Mickey Mantle event for the same aged kids - seems a shame for them to conflict with each other.

Strangely, the Junior Sunbelt does not have any kind of website. The closest I could come was the McAlester Chamber of Commerce.
Most juniors (06 kids) are too old for Mickey Mantle. Are you talking about 06 or 07 kids? The junior sunbelt is made up primarily of 06 kids. You also need to be picked by the state high school association. This is not a tournament you just go and enter like most out there. My question would be what kind of tournament is this in Texas? I thought all-star stuff would start in July?

The kids i am talking about are generally 07s - one or more will most likely be asked to play on the state team. The kids I am thinking of have had some teammates who are 06s play in the past when they were incoming Juniors. A lot of next year's Juniors [at least those in two major metro areas of our state] are committed to go to the Mickey Mantle World Series Qualifier [a relatively new thing - an early season qualifier] which overlaps with the Junior Sunbelt. Maybe I am confused, but it's the 07 kids I know who have been told to expect an invitation to the Junior Sunbelt. Is there a third "Sunbelt" that I am not aware of???
