The event was incredible.
To the best of my knowledge every game saw rain on days 1 & 2. Late afternoon/evening games on day 1 were washed out as well as a.m. games on day 2. But PG and the grounds crew managed to get things going again in the early afternoon on Day 2. I spent all of day 1 in a rain coat and most of day 2 in a much beefier poncho (next year PG will sell official PG Ponchos!). Yet somehow they played and played.
Lots of good action from teams and players from our state/region.
Evoshield Canes made it to the Final 4. I think they gave up their first runs either today or last night. To say their pitching was on fire is an understatement.
Tidewater Orioles went 2-1 and beat 2 really tough teams.
Richmond Brave's were definitely the tough luck crew of the bunch. They gave up only 6 runs in 3 games. But only scored 2. Finishing with 2 losses and a tie against national powerhouse Orlando Scorpions Purple! The Scorps lineup was filthy too - but that could be said about most teams there.
Also down on "scout teams" were Tyler Allen on the Royals Scout team and Porter Reinhart on the Rockies Scout team.
This was my first time down. It lived up to the hype! Top top talent. Every MLB team was represented. Many teams had 15-25 scouts there. Many of the top colleges were there. Its a different scene then East Cobb though. I'd say this is more of a "pro" event to showcase for the MLB scouts. Most kids are already committed so many schools dont find the need to go. Big schools are there making sure their commits see them and make sure they dont get the draft bug. And they are looking at the stud underclassmen.
There were games with easy 100, 200, 300 scouts in attendance. You have to keep your head on a swivel in order to not get hit by the golf carts!
I'd say its like a baseball circus. The greatest show on earth!
Way different then East Cobb is that this is the Marlins/Cardinals spring training complex. 1 minor league style stadium plus 12 or 13 other beautiful fields all within an easy 10 minute walk. No driving all over the state to watch baseball.
