Coach May,
Sully was out to see his 3 recruits this am! Big Grin

I heard Midlodads son did well. Smile

I got a chance to meet Jerseydad and Floridafan today. Smile

And couldn't go without seeing Jerry. Wink

I got a chance to see a scout I have known for awhile and meet some new ones, son's coaches and son's advisor.

I also had a chance to meet a very nice young man this evening, Marcus Lemon.

Being at blue field 7 brought back great memories. Frown

TR, I heard you were not in town today?

Have a great time and best of luck to all!

Congrats to our College Select kids who are now 2-0 going into Sundays action

I thank all of you for sending the team pictures and good wishes---

I also thank my 4 man staff for the job they are doing while I am up here in the Northeast in the rain and 60 MPH winds---this is why it called a team effort

Good luck the rest of the way guys

Actually we're already back home! With son being a pitcher and already being spent, it was a true cameo appearance on Friday. Happily it went well or it would've been a very long trip home.

Unfortunately the team we partnered up with is having an off weekend offensively, and the pool draw didn't do them any favors, either.
Coach May, I can't say much for the Dirtbags choice of jerseys however after watching them play on Saturday, the camouflage shirts seem appropriate. As they move into the final 8 the Dirtbags are definitely in the "hunt" for a championship!

TPM and PGStaff, thanks for taking a few minutes to chat. It was a pleasure meeting both of you.

Like Mildo Dad’s son, my guy made a quick in and out appearance and we are back in Jersey but the trip was worth every minute. Great facility, incredible coverage by schools and scouts and most importantly, great baseball everywhere you looked. This was the perfect way to end a very long season…

Good luck to all the HSBB websters still down in Jupiter,
PG, send along my thanks to your bloggers for all their kind comments on Midlo Son. Plus, they credited him with one more MPH than I'd been told before!

The arm is starting to feel tired sometimes, so we're close to winter shut-down time. While the MPH was good this weekend it wasn't as good as it was 4 weeks ago at a college showcase. But the command was there this time around and I'll trade a few MPH for that!

As you know, I get a big "I told you so" with Midlo Son about this entire trip. He didn't really want to go all the way to FL for one game, didn't think it'd be worth it, but with your and Andy's help we persuaded him that he needed to do it. Some day you can use him as an example to others who have similar doubts about whether these trips are worth it.

My favorite moment of Friday was when a college coach asked me if Midlo Son knew where he was going to school next year. I told him I was pretty sure he'd be finishing high school. The look on his face gave me a kick!
I echo all the good things said about the event this year. Particularly the overall quality of all the teams I saw.

My congratulations to my sons coach who had about half his team and half of alot of kids he didn't know (like my son). We lost the first game after that he adjusted and we didn't lose again unfortunately that one loss did us in.

For my son -- he did very well and was rewarded with a great offer that sounds like a great fit for him -- if it could only be closer than halfway across the US then it would be perfect.

Can't have everything though.
This thread started with some comments on Michael Main. As you all know, we were there and saw his outing in person.

I just have to say that some of what's been posted -- on the WWBA site in particular -- I think is really unfair to this very outstanding ball player.

I think it is fair to say he didn't have his best control that one day. But he's a power pitcher, and power pitchers are going to have days where they walk a few guys.

He gave up three hits in the 7th inning, and along with a walk, that led to 2 runs. We lost, 2-1. That's all true.

What that doesn't tell you is, none of the three hits were hit hard. The first RBI came on a soft liner that just barely cleared the 1B's glove. The second RBI was about to be the last out of the inning when it hit a rock or something and took a nasty hop past the SS.

This hardly qualifies as a meltdown. The kid has great stuff and he showed it. The other team was picked before the tourney as one of the top teams there. They battled and they finally got a few breaks. They weren't the kinds of guys who would just give up over a big MPH number. (And yet Main had 5 K's in 2 innings.)

This is baseball, folks. The best teams don't always win, the best hitters don't always hit, the best pitchers don't always shut 'em out.

It also bears mention that if our team had scored more than one run, the whole thing might've gotten little or no notice.

I think it is fair to say it wasn't Main's best day, and it's fair to say that a very good team picked itself up off the mat to win in their last at bat. I'm just kind of taken aback at the way this got written up in some quarters.

Can we at least wait 'til he's with the Yankees before we give this teenager the A-Rod treatment?

I agree with Midlo Dad. Did he have his best stuff? No. Did he lose the game after an amazing performance by Midlo Son? Yes. But that doesn't mean the criticism should come and put the kid down as if he doesn't belong thought of at the level he is. I was at the game that Main lost and the electricity on his fastball was unparalled by anyone at the tournament with the exception of Ricky Porcello, who pitched for the Bandits in their first game in front of a movie theatre of golf carts.

Midlo Dad is also correct in that the hardest hit ball of the day was a foul ball. All the hits were bloopers or seeing-eye singles.

Michael Main didn't pitch up to what everyone knows he can potentially do. Despite his dismal performance and his L in the book, there is no doubt in my mind nor I don't think in anyone else's that he is still one of the top 5, if not higher, pitchers in high school baseball.

On the other hand, Midlo Son's performance was incredible. Scouts were running over each other and on the cell phone the entire game trying to find out if the "2008" on the roster was a misprint.

Personally in my first experience in Jupiter I loved it. The competition was the highest I have ever seen and the tournament was very well run. I played for College Select, and coming into Sunday morning's doubleheader we were 2-0. Unfortunately, we lost both games by 1 run in late innings and did not advance out of pool play. PG kindly let us play one more consolation game on Monday morning against a Puerto Rican team so we could get more exposure and get on the field one more time until we made the flight back to the bitter northeast.

A special thanks has to go out to PG Staff and everyone that helped to make this event happen. Dodging sudden tropical rain storms and scheduling troubles with teams who couldn't change flight times is hectic business, but they handled it excellently.

The one complaint I have about Jupiter is this: Why weren't there more scouts there? I only saw there were 700 that registered and only saw about 100 golf carts. I would think there could be more at this sort of thing. I was very disappointed when I looked behind home plate to see hundreds of scouts hovering over every reading on the radar gun and every stop watch that clicked at the crack of the bat.

Smile (just kidding)

~JH
