Justmom, thats kind of funny. I got an email today from our son saying he is coming home tomorrow night, but he will be going out with friends right after he gets here. Our 10 year old started to cry, and said 'that's no way to treat us'. It's the first time he has been home since he left for school. I don't expect to see him too much while he is around here for Thanksgiving break. Enjoy.
Since UCR is still in the middle of "fall ball" and scrimmages, our son's teammates won't get to go home till next week. And unfortunately for them ... well, looks like practice hasn't been going as well as the coaches would like lately, so they added another practice on Wednesday. Now some of these boys won't get home till Wednesday night ... and I know they will be out the door in a flash to get together with friends ... and have to return on Sunday evening to face another week of "fall ball" ... I feel badly for the parents of the boys who live ****her away, but then ... we did raise them up to be independent, didn't we?

We learn a lot from crayons:
some are sharp; some are dull; some are pretty;
some have weird names; all are different colors.
And they all have to learn to live in the same box.
Our oldest is in his third year at Columbia in NYC. He won’t be coming home, to San Diego, this year. His semester break is 3 weeks later and he comes home then for a month. He didn’t come home last year either. There are lots of students who stay so they have a major pot-luck. Everyone brings their favorite recipe from home. After he went to the Macy’s parade he was calling me from the market for my ham recipe so that he could make it. A little last minute but it was a hit and this year he has to make 2!

This thread got me thinking back on his first year and first trip home. We had put him on a plane in mid-August to be picked up in NYC by a football coach and leave for his first camp. He was exhausted, sore, excited, and having the time of his life. Then the attacks of 9-11 came. He called as he watched the 2nd tower crash from his dorm. The next several weeks were very emotional, as it was for everyone. Thanksgiving he was finally coming home. His first time trying to get to Newark airport on his own. The sub-way stopped…the busses were stuck in traffic. I called when he should have been checked in and at the gate and he was just getting to the airport. I was hysterical thinking that he wasn’t going to make his flight. He called my office to say that he was checked in and all was fine. The receptionist FORGOT to give me the message. I was crying hysterically until an hour later I happen to see the note at her desk!!!. I followed his flight on-line the whole way. His was the last flight in for the night. The airport was pretty empty and quiet. I saw him and SCREAMED “THERE HE IS!”. Everyone turns around. When he got to baggage claim I was sobbing again and couldn’t let him go. Picture a 6’6” 300 lb OT with his mommy sobbing and hanging on him. My baby was finally home safe.

I like the way you think ...

Mom X 4 - Great story - I can just imagine! Has that receptionist's neck un-throttled yet?
H-Mom - sure know what you mean. We've still got a bit of fall ball going on up here with the summer team, but things are winding down otherwise... Game on Sunday, tho - thank goodness!
