From The Frederick News Post 4/19/11

The departure of George Richardson as manager of Mount Airy's Gold Star Post 191 American Legion Baseball team in February left post officials scrambling to find a replacement.
They didn't have to look far.

Kenny Keith, former manager of Damascus Post 171, was named Mount Airy's new manager Sunday. He becomes the fourth manager in Gold Star post baseball history.

"George and I have a lot of respect for each other," Keith said. "He built that program to where it is today. We played Mount Airy several times over the years when I was coaching at Damascus. I'm looking forward to managing again."

Keith's previous experience in Legion baseball covers 18 years with Damascus as a manager and a coach. Keith was a coach when Damascus won the state Legion title in 2000.

Keith managed the team for several years after that, the last coming in 2006. He followed the Mount Airy situation and thought about getting back into coaching.

When it became known the post needed a manager to field a team this year, Keith interviewed for the position. He hasn't wasted any time getting back into Legion baseball mode.

Keith has visited schools feeding into the Mount Airy Legion system, which includes Linganore, South Carroll, Century, Urbana and Oakdale.

"We tell potential players what is expected of them in Legion baseball," he said. "They know it involves a commitment. So far, the players we've talked to understand this."

I'm biased toward George and what he has built. Good luck to this fellow and the players who play for him.

I'm told the post wanted to scale down the profile of the baseball program, to include *no* in-season tournaments. It will be very difficult for the new manager to recruit all the high quality players if he is going to have to stick to just a legion league schedule.
