I noticed some parents posting about sons having labrum surgery. Can I ask, was the surgery for your sons paid for by a pro baseball team or by a college? Did any of you pay for it yourselves? And if so, how much does it cost?

My son was diagnosed with a torn labrum 4 years ago, in senior year of HS. He did rehab without surgery, and pitched for 2 years in college but usually in varying degrees of pain. I think sometimes the labrum healed partially, then would tear again and his arm would go dead (sometimes in the middle of a pitching appearance).

He gave up on pitching about 2 years ago when the pain was too bad even when he was sitting still. He is out of college but thinking about getting labrum surgery so that he could at least toss a ball again and play catch with his future children. We are just in the talking stage. He has not gone back to the sports ortho yet because even those visits are very expensive for a young guy starting out (but we are willing to help him pay of course). He has medical insurance but thinks this would be elective surgery so the insurance wouldn't cover it. Is that true? Regaining normal use of his arm seems like valid medical treatment. But he would prefer to have a baseball ortho do the surgery, in hopes that he might be able to pitch some day in a local men's league or whatever.

Any reports on how the surgery and costs went for your sons at any age would be helpful. Even if it was TJ surgery instead of labrum, the info might apply.

Thank you!

BaseballMomAndFan,

Welcome to HSBBW.

I'm no expert, but I think your son's situation has some complications such as the age of the injury. It's been a while since it first occurred and the insurance company may balk at paying. The only correct answer will be from the current carrier.

The good news is that, surprisingly Dr. James Andrews (the best in the biz) is on some insurance plans.

I wish you and your son the best.
My son had surgery for a torn labrum when he was a senior in high school. We paid for it. The cost would be determined by your insurance plan, deductible, in or out of network, etc. The surgery itself was I think about $18,000. My other son's Tommy John surgery was $25,000--we paid for that, too. The rehab was another story!!!! Eek

By the way, welcome to the hsbaseballweb! You've come to the right place!

I see you live in the Midwest. Both of my sons surgeries were done by the docs at Midwest Orthopedics at Rush in Chicago. They are the team doctors to the White Sox, Bulls, and another team, but I forgot which one. I heartily recommend them. In fact, they performed five operations on three of my children in 21 months--the labrum, Tommy John, two for torn wrist cartilage--all baseball related -- and then a not-so-simple casual bike collision which resulted in surgically repaired broken bones....Not only are they on my speed dial, but I have one surgeon's cell phone number! I've already asked for a "family plan" at Athletico where they have gone (one just started) for physical therapy.

Please, if you'd like more info, send me a private message and I'll be happy to contact you.

Check with your son's insurance company. If he is on a group plan, they may cover it without a hitch. Private insurance-----probably not.....I really dislike insurance.

I wish your son the best. Good luck!

Thank you both for your helpful information and warm welcome.

Play baseball, how could you afford all of those surgeries along with paying for college? But I sure do appreciate the facts and figures. I didn't want to complicate my first post but my son thinks he may also need TJ surgery to be able to throw pain-free. He pitched so long with shoulder problems that it affected the rest of his arm.

He is still on our BlueCross/BlueShield insurance plan but probably not for much longer. He is making an appointment this week with an orthopedic surgeon but not the sports ortho he saw in HS because he has moved for his job.

Thanks again.
We have four labrum repairs between our three sons - insurance paid for all four. The prices quoted by play baseball are right in the ballpark. We, however, have insurance and only paid our deductible portion for all four surgeries.

This is not elective surgery and is not a problem that will get better on it's own. Get it done while he's on your insurance - he has to use that arm for lots of things in life! Good luck!
"Elective" doesn't mean a surgery that insurance won't pay for. For example, if you need a knee replacement, it's elective versus emergent (heart bypass).

Your son's torn labrum should absolutely be paid for by your insurance company. However, you have to go to providers that participate with the insurance. It sounds like your son followed the medical plan of care and participated in therapy, etc. which obviously wasn't successful. There is no reason that your insurance shouldn't pay, but get all preauths up front as always.
