Yes, this one is real but about High School Ball. You are at the local McDonalds. Parent comes up with son and introduces themselves. Mentions that they are in town and wants to see high school etc. Then, wants to know what the chances are of you starting their son. You/I tell them that other than telling them where the high school is and the AD's contact number, this converstation has to end due to IHSA limitations. For those that don't know, the Illinois High School Association has places stricter limits on who can talk to a prospective player and what can be said. Now, the Dad says that "you could be missing out on a good thing" because Coach X has alreay met with them and the boy will play. Now, added to the scenerio is that you have heard of the kid and know he was all-conference in a smaller but very competitive conference last year as a freshman. Coach X is a conference coach. Some options but not exclusive options include:

  • Sit down and talk to the Dad because you really need the position that this kid plays filled and you know that is why the Dad is here although it is unspoken. Naturally, you say that you will deny any of this conversation.
  • Call up Coach X to see if, in fact, they have talked. You have a good but not great relationship with Coach X.
  • You run as fast as you can to your AD, tell them of the conversation including the kid's name and you mention that you want this info forwarded to the IHSA in case the kid actually plays for the other team.
  • My final option but you can add your own - You don't do a thing because you know that most of the time, people that do this are just jerking your chain anyway and don't have any intentions of moving in.

OK SO I'LL BE GOOD NOW AND NOT POST SCENERIOS FOR A WHILE. (AT LEAST A DAY OR TWO. LOL!!!)

"Failure depends upon people who say I can't."  - my dad's quote July 1st, 2021.  CoachB25 = Cannonball for other sites.

Why are you eating in Mickey D's in the first place? Razz

Team fishing is a full time job for some parents in Youth Baseball..... Though not as cumbersome as in HS where you actually have to move to a new district to flip/flop teams.

I think I would go with part of 3 and then 4. just let the AD know the parent came up to you.
Cong - Very Wise. I agree. That is what I did. I always make sure when one of these things happens that I tell my A.D. and that I issued his contact number. T.R. I agree also that the reality is that this person never talked to anyone in our conference with the exception of a conversation much like ours. I wonder now if he will tell another coach that he and I talked. Well, that is why you have a "standard procedure" when dealing with this stuff.

BTW, I typically get the salad at Micky D's. About half of the time I get the grilled chicken on that salad but could do better. I like the low fat dressing!

Coach B25,

This has been going on for I know 60 years around here. There is a true story about a coach that visited a family farm out in the booneys 25 miles North of Selma , Alabama every week.
He showed up unannounced to eat their Sunday dinner and recruit the son for his football and baseball team.

The mother finally said " son, your gonna have to go on down there and play for Coach Sims because we are running out of chickens".
