First I need to address "playing" catcher. Catching is not playing, catching is work. Therefore you "catch"! Big Grin

On a serious note. Most LH players that have the arm strength to catch will end up on the mound as a LHP. A strong arm lefty is an asset to any pitching rotation.
Fungo.
Well I have first-hand info about playing as a left handed catcher, hence my screen name lol. I have been catching for most of my life and will be playing college baseball as a left handed catcher next year. Most people will say the right handed hitter will be in the way on a throw down to second, which is never the case. How many times does a right handed catcher have trouble with a left handed batter? never. The only real concern some people have is about the throw to third. With a right handed batter, the time it takes for a lefty to make a jump pivot and throw to third is almost the same as it takes for a righty to shuffle behind the hitter. There are advantages on the throw to first in pickoffs, blocked third strikes, bunts, home to first double plays... Also, there are more right handed pitchers, and a left handed catcher has an easier job recieving for a righty than a righty catcher would. People have told me all my life how it does not work, yet I am still playing and keep proving people wrong.

That would be my concern. You would have to clear the backside of the Rh batter just like a right handed catcher. Other than that, if a kid can do it, why not?
well, come to think of it... my pickoff move to first is a lot quicker than when i throw to third

benny distafano was the last lefty (emergency) catcher i remember who caught in the minors

it could work, but how many leftys throw straight? or shortarm the ball? all the fundamentals are the same, just reversed

in the bizarro world all catchers would be lefties
Some time people just don't want to tell it like it is. Let me be the one that does. It aint gonna happen. There are just too many reasons for it not to happen. Just like there are no lh ss or lh 2b or lh 3b. If you want to catch and your the best option on your team as a lh catcher then fine go for it. But your not going to change the baseball world son. Your not going to convince baseball people that it can be the norm. Its not going to happen. Why is it so important to you that people except it? If your a flat out stud we will hear about you down the road. There is no doubt that if you make it to the college level or beyond we will hear about you. And I hope you do. But I will still be here saying that it just isnt the best option unless you are the best option and that is fewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww and farrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr between. Why? I think you already know. You are just not willing to except it. Thats ok if it works for you and you can excell there fine with me.
