Chuck Camuso, Homestead HS in Cupertino passed yesterday. Nice bio from his HS principal.

quote:
Chuck Camuso began teaching and coaching in the Fremont Union High School District in 1963. Prior to coming to FUHSD, he coached in the East Bay. As well as coaching varsity baseball at Homestead, he coached at the now closed Sunnyvale High School and Cupertino High School.

After 53 years of refereeing, Coach Camuso, at age 77, retired prior to the 2011 season. He had worn his striped shirt and knickers for the last time, or so he thought. Camuso came out of retirement for one last game in December 2011, the annual Thanksgiving Day Big Bone rivalry between Lincoln and San Jose. For Camuso, who had only missed one Bone game since 1960 (he was hospitalized during the 1985 contest), it was the 50th time he was part of the officiating crew for the Thanksgiving affair.

In 2010, Coach Camuso called an end to his 25-year run as the baseball coach at Homestead High. Including 19 years at Sunnyvale, Camuso served 44 seasons at the varsity level in the Fremont Union High School District and his teams totaled more than 600 victories, leading to him holding the record for the most wins by an active baseball coach. Among the many players he coached were Scott Erickson, who pitched in the Major Leagues and Matt Vokemier, who made it to Triple-A, one step away from the majors. Evan Marshall, a 2008 graduate, reached AA in his first season of pro ball last summer.

Coach Camuso's career was an illustrious one, including work at the college level in both basketball and football, three seasons in the NBA and some NFL pre-season assignments. As a teacher, coach and referee, he touched the lives of countless others in Sunnyvale, Cupertino and beyond during his multiple roles of referee, teacher and coach. Coach Camuso was quoted as saying “the love of the game is number one”, and his many years of coaching and teaching reflected that passion.
