Saw a post in the general forum that asked "Legion or AAU travel ball"

Here in Virginia, is it possible to do both, especially if you are a position player and not a pitcher? Showcase baseball and Legion? Aren't most of the Legion games during the week, up until tournament time?

The legion rules allow you to play legion ball and any other showcase or travel team up until the tournement begins. Once tournement play starts the legion rule book states (from the 2009 rule book/ I am sure 2010 will read the same)

" Clarification: Dual participation shall in no way interfere with a player’s responsibility to his American Legion Baseball team. Once tournament play has begun (district tournament up and through American Legion World Series) the department baseball chairman cannot grant permission to participate in non-Legion sanctioned baseball events, baseball tournaments, exhibition games, showcases or combines."

"The American Legion believes team loyalty is a key ingredient for any team sport. Any American Legion Baseball player missing any portion of an American Legion tournament because that player participated in another non-sanctioned baseball event such as exhibition game, tournament showcase, combine or other youth programs shall be ineligible for post-season tournament play."

As far as days games are played... In the Tidewater area Junior Legion games (summer 2009) were played Tuesdays and Saturdays and Senior Legion games were played Wednesdays and Sundays if I remember correctly.

Hope this helps.
Those are rules but i think every individual team can have "policies" that can restrict a player's ability to play on other teams...varies from team to team even within local Districts.

Some teams in our are take a Legion only approach others exercise more flexibility- most seem to lean toward "Legion Only" regardless of the what rules say

Legion games typically run 3- 4 days a week including a Sunday 4:00 game in District 10.

Very demanding summer schedule
When I played Legion (2 years ago) we played on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sunday. These are all 9 inning ball games so calling 4 9-innning ball games a week a demanding schedule is an understatement. I had a great time playing and I played against some really good competition and grew from it because at the time I was only a sophmore.

IMHO, a good showcase team is better for a kid looking to get seen by colleges. College coaches don't come out until the Legion playoffs start or the North vs. South Legion showcase game they have every year in my area. Legion is a much cheaper alternative to showcase ball however and is something that each player and their family should consider strongly.

Of course there may be local rules and coaches may have policies. I just sighted the rule with regards to tournement play and when there would be an issue with elgibility according to the legion rule book.
