Sons HS is strongly suggesting he play on the American Legion team which is closely associated with his HS and HS Coach. They want you to commit 100% of your time to the Legion team. Son would like to play with a club team and be involved with usual PG events, other Highly touted Showcases and some College camps. He does not want to rock the boat and endure possible playing time issues with HS Coach next year but he wants to be out and about where he can be seen as well as visit some of the Colleges already interested in this 2015 LHP. Thoughts, suggestions, comments, advice all welcome.

LeftyDad22,

This is a recurring dilemma on this board.  If this was my son I would suggest he do what is best for his long term academic and athletic goals.  This really isn't about the high school coach but what your son wants and thinks he is ready for.

I think this is a case of truly knowing oneself.  If he is genuine top recruit, and ready for showcasing between his sophomore and junior year then go for it.  Typically, these are going to be your upper echelon programs looking for national level talent.  If he is not that level of player, then I think another year of Legion with local camps & showcases may be more appropriate.   He can do the national showcases in the Fall (junior year) and next Summer (between junior and senior year).  JMO.

Fenway thanks your input. He already has serious interest from Top 25 teams, one of which who frowned upon the possibility of him playing Legion. You see the Legion team will not allow you do any camps, showcases or anything during their season but a very goo chance of playing in Regionals and even World Series last year. He pitched in Jupiter last fall and did very well which got him lots of attention, that's why we are so inclined to continue that route but do not want to upset the apple cart at HS.

LeftyDad22,

No problem.  If I'm reading this right, we agree.  He has serious interest from top programs.  No further explanation needed. I think your son should share his decision with his high school coach in a logical well thought out manner.   You've told us everything we need to know in a few sentences.   I would think your son could do the same, and give the coach a chance to support him.   Good luck with the high school coach, and the summer showcase season.

As a dad of a LHP I would be concerned about how much my kid was used by a Legion Coach/HS Coach if they are one in the same.  We have an instance now locally where a verbal D1 commit is prob. being pitched too much right now in HS.  The weather has sucked in the MW and his arm is prob. not in shape.  It's been communicated that there is a concern the Legion Coach will not use the reasonable judgement and add more pitch count and call more CB than is tolerable for a 17yo.This kid is not being pushed into Legion as our HS coach does not care where you play, as it shuld be !!!

My concern would be with use of him first and then you have to weigh out what sounds like politics.  IMO if pressure is being asserted by a HS coach that's not good.  If a suiteable comp. team is available with a knowledgeable coach and he has the ability to present himself for the next level it's a no brainer.

Just let the kid decide... I do find it interesting when I hear of college coaches, who will preach TEAM from the highest mountain... They want a kid to go to 2 or 3 showcases and call THAT a summer!?

7 on 7 football.

"showcase baseball"

"viewing tournaments in basketball"

These things make it difficult for summer coaches like legion or what have you that are trying to win and develop players ... If I had a legion team now I would have a dead weekend that would work for one nearby showcase and let guys go post some numbers (and drop a bundle of that troublesome cash) and then come back and work on their game all summer.

Best wishes to your son... Once again, let the kid decide, he has info about the HS coach that you don't ...
