I grew up playing legion. That was "travel" ball when I was in High School. That being said, I didn't grow up in Virginia and I'm not familiar with the LEGION environment here, especially in the Richmond area. In fact I coach a "travel" team locally, which is comprised of a few 8th graders (playing JV ball) and the rest are FR who have made their JV teams.

That being said, I ran into a guy I've known for awhile and he brought up Legion Ball. Turns out he's friends with the Director for Legion Baseball in the area and he talked to me for awhile about at least considering maybe helping out or coaching a Legion Team.

I plan on talking to him again hopefully this week and maybe sitting down for a beer with him and hopefully the Director and talking about it.

Right now I already have a few Summer tournaments planned for my team (a couple of College hosted tournaments close by, East Cobb 14U in June, among others) so I don't know how this would fit in with Legion.

From my understanding with what I've HEARD in the past about local (Richmond Area...Post 284 to be exact...at least I think it's Post 284) is that there is a JUNIOR Legion Team...and after hearing about the players on the team I was a bit shocked. JR Legion when I was a FR was pretty stout competition to even make the team. The players on the JR Legion team from my understanding, most didn't make their JV teams.

I wonder if this was because they aren't getting the exposure they have in the past, and the better players just aren't going out for Legion?

Anyone with any knowledge or first hand experience with Legion in the area, if you can shoot me a PM or email and give the "scoop" on what the status of LEGION ball is in the area.

Thanks!

Jr legion has been almost nonexistent in the richmond area in the last few years. From what I have heard thjere will be an attempt to field a jr legion team in the midlothian area this summer.
i think the goal will be to get kids involved at a younger age and feed into the legion teams.
Regarding playing outside of your assigned boundary they take that pretty seriously...i have heard most would require you get cut by the team in your boundary before considering a waiver of any kind.

there are some great legion teams in Richmond and I think legion is stronger here than thje rest of the state.
right now I think there is lots of competition for players with all the showcase teams out there...Legion has always taken a pretty hard line in terms of kids being on multiple teams...in fact there is a rule addressing that once their tournament starts.
there are pros and cons to legion vs. the other options. One huge plus on the legion side is the cost which is usually minimal. What any individual player does depends on whjat his goals with baseball are and where he fits in...it is very difficult to do legion and showcase baseball in the summer if not impossible.

Tryouts are generally not an open announced tryout for most teams...kind of an invitation situation although I am sure if a kid asks he will be given a chance. The tryoiuts themselves happen as soon as High school season ends. I would recommend finding out which post is yours and contacting the coach in the next couple of weeks if interested.
VA legion baseball is very strong.. Richmond is known for having strong teams, as well as the tidewater area.

Just this past year a tidewater team, not sure of the exact post number made it all the way to the world series.
(won a district tournament, state tournament, and a few region tournaments i believe to make it all the way to Washington state for the legion world series).
Well after a few phone calls...it seems there have been some strong legion teams in this area. However, it seems that these stronger teams seemed to consist of players who had already committed to play ball at the next level (or just weren't pursuing it at all) when they committed to a Legion team.

Thanks for all the info.
